Title: Completed 2nd cambelt change in as many months
Post by: johnnycboy on 29 August 2008, 18:17:38
Took the car for a good run today, but seem to have severe vibrations through the car at about 70 - 80 mph,  can't seem to pinpoint exact location, any help appreciated.  had new steering idler arm and 2 new front tyres. could it need the wim treatment. :-/

I would say so. Definately sounds non cambelt related - but almost a certainty on the geometry - WIM give a discount on mention of the OOF too :y

The vibration your talking about, does the vibration come through the seat? or through the steering wheel?
At 70-80 mph I would say the rear wheels may need balancing, or like mine has a slight buckle :y
I would check the balancing first... :y

Hi Johny, youve been busy. 2 cam belts? Not on the same car presumably? Did the vibration start after the can belt work? Not sure of the connection? 5 point balance(5 studs fit into the bolt holes and balance the wheel at the 5 points where the wheel actually attaches to the car) this sorted myn at the same speed range after several attempts with a usual single point cone balancer,(a shaft through the wheel hole, with a cone tightened on the outside edge, this balances the wheel at points that have nothing to do with where the wheel is fixed to the hub) they are not accurate enough for the mig, so yeah, wim it. But i would not refer to my vibration as severe, or through the car. Sounds like there is a bit more to it, unless they completely cocked up the balancing, i might be taking it back tbh. Hope helps.

the guy i got the car from had too have new tyres fitted to get it through the mot. looks like they have been balanced but how well is another story.  the bloke was not happy at having to part with £400 for works on the car just to sell it to me.

thanks anyway

I still think I would go and have the balancing done first, then see what happens... it is far cheaper too :y

if you can drive through the vibration then it's probably most definitely a balancing issue. Get this resolved first as everyone says.
