Title: Quick Oil Filter Question

Sorry to bother you guys with this but i was all geared up to do my first ever oil and filter change today until i went to get the filter. I was more or less sure that on my s reg 98 2.5 v6 my oil filter is the canistor type but the guy at the spares place tells me its a paper filter one. So my question i guess is which one is it??

In the crossover period, it could be either.  You'll have to physically check.

Easy enough to tell as you can see it from the engine bay

Thanks, but i know i am going to sound like a total idiot but not sure what i'm really looking for. Never done anything like this before and i was relying heavily on the guide from here. I know that complete numptys like me probably frustrate you guys but any help would really be appreciated, cant see it from looking inside the engine bay or at least i dont think i have seen it so i will go and jack the car up on the passenger side and have a look. Also whilst i am here i seem to have a large amount of oil everywhere mainly around the top which i am guessing is the cam cover gaskets and also at the rear of the engine on the drivers side, this of course could be a build up from many years of neglect so am i best to clean it up and then see if i can see where its coming from?

Youb can see it from under bonnet - passenger side towards back of engine look down - its about halfway down the block.

But probably easier, if you don't know what you are looking for, to poke you head underneath...

Make sure you use a 24mm socket or ring spanner first to undo the end cap.

If it is very tight, using a 3/8 square drive in the end will split the cap, though it's OK once the cap is free.

Do NOT overtighten on re-fitting like most garage numpties do .. it only needs a tiny tweak .. if you have a low range torque wrench its 15 Nm according to the book of lies .. I use 8 Nm and have never had a problem :)

As cast into the metal filter end cap.
Shame these monkeys can't read it.
