Do you mean not turning over quickly?
Make sure the cable connections are all good and measure the battery voltage with the ignition off and then with the engine running.
If it's turning over ok but not firing or catching very quickly, read the fault codes, it could be early warning of a crank sensor.

do the 2l 8v engine have the crank sensor fitted

Bloody heck an 8V!
I honestly don't know - does it have a mechanical distributor?

the voltage from what i remember engine off was like 36 and engine was 26 something odd

Is your multimeter set correctly, or drunk?
Should be between 12-14!

It'd be some multi-meter able to measure that kind of current! :-?

Mine started to be sluggish on the starter, not all the time but every few days or so, then got left stranded in Tesco's car park with a car full of frozen food, I tried all the tricks, hitting it, shorting the terminals etc but total failure of the starter motor, solenoid and the motor failed at the same time!!!!!! Its auto so couldnt even bump it.
2 1/2 hours later got towed home by the RAC with a boot full of defrosted food >:( The stupid controller sent the patrol to Rainham ESSEX, not Kent where i was.

Not running 12.8
Running 14.9

Voltages seem ok, running is a little high though, Take the car to a battery supplier and have them do a drop test on it to be sure, only takes a few mins to do.
If the battery passes i would start looking at earth points, battery terminals, starter connections etc, take them off, clean and grease then refit, if its still the same think it will need a new starter motor.
