hi
I just bought a w reg auto 2 litre cd saloon. It 60500 miles on the clock and a good history to about 47000 miles, which was a year and a half ago, so i'm fairly sure its genuine, however it has a funny noise coming from underneath, not a whirring, and not a grinding but sort of like the two (sorry, i am lame at describing stuff), anyhow, the last mot had an advisory notice with it, which wasnt with the paperwork, so i phoned the garage that did the mot, and found the advice was regarding transmission noise and occasional cutting out.
i'm trying to figure if the noise is the transmission and i have trouble to look forward to or not. I have a v reg 2 litre auto with a good gearbox/torqueconvertor (was replaced with a newish one recently) that i could swap out if people think that'd help, but i'd like to trey and figure it out a bit more definitively first.
Im going to check brakes, suspension and exhaust at weekend, aswell as service it and clean the ICV and the rocker cover jobby that covers where the spark plugs go (yes, that was the technical name for it), so i'll see if that helps with the noise, may also change the auto fluid, but would appreciate any ksuggestions from anyone.
Finally, sorry for the rambling post, its the first one, and i'm not sure what info is relevant and what isn't to give!!
oh yeah, have a few general questions, but i'll post those in general chat, cos this post is waaay to long already.

Wo, seem to have slipped through with out any replys jim. Def start with atf change its about all you can do with the box without removal. And then i guess you may as well put the good one in? 5 or 6 litres of dexron 3, 2 sump gaskits and you may be able to clean the filter. Guide in maintenance section. Others will advise no doubt. Hope helps.

Might be worth seeing if you can get it on a ramp somewhere and have a nose underneath with the engine running.

Thought it was 7 litres?

yeah, i got 7,had 2 left over. Just. Seems to vary. You cant get it all out anyway. Some left in the torque converter/cooler. Keep the left over for any pop ups.

hi
I seem to recall buying 5 last time i did a change, and having to go back for more as it wasnt enough. i think i'll stick it on a ramp to see if i can try and narrow down the area the noise is coming from and do the atf then, i think its a must do anyway, as i reckon the changes could be smoother.
The box i was going to swap it out with is from a prefacelift 99 v reg. Its still a 2 litre, but i didnt know if it'd go in ok or not, as i'm not too sure if any changes were made when the facelift was done.
One more thing to note, which i dont think is right, is the gear selector stick thing (again with the technical!) seems to shake slightly in the drive position when cruising above 50, is this normal, or a pointer to something i should know about?

maybe the motors doing a dance. Usual 4 pot maintenance, clean breathers and icv, they get blocked. Crank sensors play up can be cleaned but usually need replacing with a genuine item. Paper clip the engine ecu for any codes. Maybe missfire?
50 is a change point when cruising on my last 2 v6s.
Maybe the box is not happy at that point. Maybe.
Do the maintenance and see if that cured it i guess.
Atf change is very messy. Would suggest a ramp anyway as you say, but it can be done on the drive.
I would pm Mark dtm on the gearbox swap. Just to be sure. I think they all fit, its just weather the respective box can take the power from that engine, but i dont think thats an issue on the 4 pots afaik and from what ive read, but dont take my word for it. Hope helps.

also maybe check engine mounts while you under it.

it varies but generally 6-7 litres.
