Yes richie the heat shield or shields on the cats can come adrift.

Funny enough was under mine today and noticed that one shield was above the cat and the other which was sort of held on with a broken jubilee clip was underneath the cat :(.

Yeah, my 99 did it a bit, heat shields come loose, someone said about a big jubilee clip to tighten it up but i dont see how that can last. They cant go far they cover the  angle bend between the manifold and the cats but they are quite heavily filled with what ever it is. Could be a number of things, need to get under there and have a look with the engine running. Jack and stands job really.

Mine has a rattle like this too.  Only at slow idle when it's not so smooth.  I hoped it was just a heat shield but seems to be something in the os cat box.  Got under it and the heatshields move but just dont make the right noise.  A sharp tap of the cat box makes the noise suggesting it's something inside :(.

How much is a cat nowadays out of interest?

Liam

Ive had this before.........it turned out to be loose stones rattling around caught up in the sub frame......dunno how they got there......but a blast with an airline......stopped the rattling.....
Sounded like stones being shaken in a tin can.
