Title: Rear brake pads - pins
Post by: trebor on 06 September 2008, 13:32:44
Have replaced front discs and pads no problem (bargain at £70 + VAT - trade club)

Anyway, went to do rear pads, but cant budge the pins on the offside (not tried the nearside yet)  Will taking off the caliper help?

Any other suggestions?

no taking caliper off will make it worse ! try giving the caliper itself a good smack with a hammer then pins should tap out ! :y

I'm pretty sure they will only come out in one direction ie from the middle of the car. You haven't tried to knock them towards the middle. It's been a while since I've had need to look at mine.

I knew they only went one way. ::)  :y  You'd think I'd know by now, after all I've only had this car for 5 years, the Senator before it 6 yrs, the one before that 3, the Carlton before that 3yrs, the Manta before that 6 yrs - which had similar/same at  the front & the Cav coupe for a year before that 1 year before it met its death  :(  :y  :y

I know cause I did the rear pads on both ours less than 1 year ago, and recently fitted replacement rear calipers on mine. :y
Same as the Carltons (had lots of them)

No been trying to knock in towards the diff, not outwards.

debug is right, they go inwards to be removed. You need a reasonable 3mm? pin punch though

A little Freeway or such, sprayed on the pins head(inside of caliper) to free off the little spring clip on the end of the pin.

Soak ends in plus gas or similar.  In absence of decent punch grind point off suitably sized nail and use as drift.  Quite often needs a good clout to initially move!

If you need to hit the punch/etc more than once, you need a bigger knocking stick!!  ;D  :y
