While doing my Cam Gaskets it would probably be a good idea to sort out my leaky oil cooler.
I was slowly losing a small amount of coolant. The dash coolant warning used to come on about every three weeks. The Vx "Stealer" quoted me £699 to fix it, but I bought a bottle of radweld instead and that did the trick but while I've got the top off seems a good time to re-seal it.
The Maintenance Guide has a picture and list of parts for the Oil Cooler.
Seems I should just need the seals (Nos. 2,5 & 7) and a tube of sealant(4).
Does the sealant replace the gasket shown in the picture? (Gasket is not listed in parts list and Haynes only mentions to discard it)
Do I really need to remove the Oil Cooler pipes from the block beside the oil filter to just do a reseal as it specifies in the Haynes manual oil cooler removal instructions(2C.14)? I'll be doing an oil and filter change anyway.

Are you sure that the water leak is from the oil cooler plate?
Perhaps may have been better to solve the problem mate than putting Reweld into the system.
If it was my car and the plate was leaking I would replace the Oil Cooler itself whilst there, the reason for this would be you are right there and don't have to do it again anywhere in the near future, plus far easier to replace now than when the oil cooler actually gives up saving cleaning the coolant system of oil which is a pain....

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly but I couldn't afford £699 at the time and didn't know about this forum then.
Any idea how much a new oil cooler radiator costs?

They are about the £100 mark Alex.
Oh and BTW i made a mistake on the seal prices you were after they came in 2 packets, 2 in 1 & 1 on it's own £18 & £9 + VAT :-[.

when I was done mine cost 120 pound that cooler plus washers ,with TC about 90
if you need any help with that job let me know I give you hand :y

Good chance your oil cooler is stainless if its face lift, the early cars had plastic iirc and failed easily. So check with other members but the cooler should be ok. Anyone?
Re oil pipes, they are in the way of removing the cooler cover plate, there is a debate as to weather its better to bend them up out the way or remove them, for me, i had to bend them and risk a breakage, as i could not get the nuts off by the oil filter,(i have since read the filter canister can be removed, which may have helped?) anyway the point is you have to remove the plate to clean off the old gaskit, degrease etc. So one way or another the pipes have to come out the way.

Agree with Loo Knee.
If you suspect failure of need to work in that area - replace it. Although may not be immediately necessary, it could work out a good idea if you plan to keep the car ;)
