My friend cannot find a good oil cooler for his V6, so he is thinking about not putting one at all.
He would just somehow close the holes in which the oil cooler plugs into, but he is conserned if it may have some dramatic influence on the engine, because he heard from someone that on longer driving on higher speeds crankshaft would be damaged.
Can not putting an oil cooler on a V6 do any damage to the engine?
-
no it cant work without one.
Yes it will damage the engine!
Dont see to many silly questions on here, but... You will have no oil circulation at all.
-
ok,this is what would be done: a pipe running from one oil hole to another, so the oil cirrculation wouldn't be upset. The same think would be done for the water holes.
So, circulation of oil and water wouldn't be upset, but there will be no cooling of the oil.

i don't get it. couldn't he buy a new one if it's that bad? a new one qualifies as 'good' i think?
-
Ask yourself one question......would the manufacturer have gone to the (considerable) expense of fitting one if it was not needed!
-
There are/were loads of engines that don't have an oil cooler fiited to them. But by the time you've gone to the effort of blanking off the water side of the cooler & re-piped up the oil side, you might aswel put another new cooler in. Not worth the effort IMHO. :y
-
I'm guessing the problem here may be that neither a new nor used oil cooler is not readily availble in Croatia, so some sort of "fix" is being considered.....
As said .. and IMHO a bad idea.. there must be some way in which an externaly sourced oil cooler can be got to Croatia at reasonable cost ???

Thats the question :y

Irrelivant as it will be down to the cooling requirements of the specific unit

Looking at his location, i guess he does not have a local Vx dealer in Croatia.
Might be worth a trip up to Slovenia? I did see some Opel dealers there.

Get on eBay and buy one...
-
a friend of myn traveled through Croatia and the manifold exploded off his transit. At that moment he felt utter dispare. No parts network no dealers no help. Until a local happened along and directed him to "Mr mechanicals" who displayed welding and fabrication talents that left my mate rather spell bound. This was about 8 years ago but is should give you an idea of what they are up against.
However, to me, it should be fairly obvious that blockling off that oil way is never going to work and the oil needs to be cooled in that water bath for a very good reason.
I dont know what help you have in Croatia Bojan but i am certain you will cost yourself more money in the long run by not fitting an oil cooler, do it as the maker has done it, and save yourself a some money.
We may moan about our dealers in the uk, but at least we have them, (you may argue the Croatians are better off but thats another story) i dont suppose our scrapy members have one spare? I imagine it makes selling an engine impossible with out one.
How to help the guy? Anyone?

eBay....
Poland and Germany full of GM parts, they will ship to neighbours!
-
ok...so, the answer to my question is NO!
point was, it is rather hard to find that oil cooler here in Croatia.
There are a lot of GM dealers here, but the prices for V6 components tend to be outrageus.
If not puting an OC to engine is such a bad idea, he is going to buy new one.
So, thx for replies. :y

Your only other option would be to an an oil to air heat exchanger but, by the time you have bought this and fabricated the pipes etc......its likely to be cheaper to buy the original part!
-
actually, that is his 2nd option: he has a lots of parts of an kadett GSi, with a c20xe engine, among which is an air-cooled OC...probably going to use that one...
ps. and this option would be alot cheaper, because all he needs is some hydraulic pipes, and that would be like 20€, while new OC is over 200€.
