Title: Autobox Nightmare
Post by: star_whites on 08 September 2008, 10:44:24
Heres an update, changed fluid & filter last week before going to Reading this weekend. Set off with no problems (except the rain).

Got on M1 and was fine until got to 50-55 then the gearchange was very iratic, going up/down and sluggish. It did this until it got to 70 ish and then was fine up to 85 with plenty of power. It kemp doing this allthe way to reading. It also appeared to occasionally clunk down a geraround about 65mph when slowing.

On the way back I was just out of Reading when I tried to accelerate at 55 and the autobox warning came on and went into limp mode. I pulled over and stopped the engine, left it 5 mins then restarted and everything appeared ok. It then did it again 5 minutes later. I again stopped and it reset, I then drove all the way home but without engaging sports mode. It was still very eratic but it got us home ok as I managed to keep it around the 80 mark with the flow of traffic.

Anyone got any ideas. Im going to go and warm her up then check the fluid levels to make sure its not something daft like me not topping up enough but I would have thought that this would cause the gear problems all the time???

Is there a thrust washer in the front sump?

What are the selector indicator lights doing?

No, when I changed the fluid there was no large particles at all. The sumps were just full of grey paste around the magnet and accross the pans and that was it. I just gave it a thorough clean put it back together and refilled.

The lights appeared to be normal, however I do have a spare selector switch.

Right - Update

Been out to warm box up and drove it without sports mode, acceleration was fine and gearchange appeared ok, only got up to 60 on duel carriageway. On way back I put the pedal down on the dual carriagway and stuck it in sports. It pulled away really good until it reached 50-55 then it hesitated and went into limp mode. I stopped, turned engine off let it reset and then set off again. Appeared a little hestiant but drove ok without sports.

Got home jacked her up and removed sump plug. Topped up until fluid running out then refitted plug. Dropped to floor and ran through gears alowing 30-60secs in each gear. Jacked her up and removed plug. As soon as I removed plug fluid started running out even though it was at the same level as when I topped it up and it wasnt running out then??

I dropped it onto level surface and let excess fluid drain then jacked up and refitted sump plug. Appears to be ticking over niceley but not tried road test yet.

Do you think its possible that the torq converyer is shot??

not sure if relevant but what are the consequences of over filling with atf? If for what ever reason the box has to much oil?

What is it with these autoboxes? I posted a problem on here with mine recently and since then-no problem! I'm not much help, but I feel your pain.... :'(

Want to check how you re-filled the 'box.

You have to fill 'till it comes out of the level plug, then start engine and add more fluid, run through all selector positions (engine still running) check it is still full to the level hole then fit the bung before stopping engine.

Mark has a technique for when it is jacked up on the drivers side, he fills to overflowing then , with engine still running, lowers car back to ground to let any excess drain out then jacks it up again to fit the plug....engine still running of course.
