Hi, hoping someone can help please.
I'm watching an 2000 Omega on eBay which has a gearbox fault. Speaking to the seller:
Te autobox flags up fault every now and then
The fault clears when the car is restarted
When the fault occurs, the box stays in 3rd gear
Sometimes without the fault, the car clunks into 3rd?
Would you be able to help with some scenarios on what may be the most common problem please?

first place to start is atf level check or service at 60k and see if there are any signs of thrust washer in the sumps, then maybe the selector switch on the pass side is in need of a clean or has a wiring issue, if the ecu ok, check by tech 2 and it still plays up then a new box can be had fairly cheap from brakers on here. Usually if it slips it buggerd, if it wont select and bangs its atf level. But get some other opinions as well. I dont want to be responsible for you buying a car with a breaked box.

Wont hold anyone responsible mate! Appreciate the help. The car has done 90k with full service history. I'm guessing something simple. If I do get it, Ill take the "My Naff Code Reader" and laptop down and run a diagnostic

may be fixable,but if not you can get a known good box for 100 quid or less.so if the car is at a bargain price,i would buy it. :y

if I were you would pay a bit more and dont go in mess of repairing or changing autobox..Autobox repairs are fairly complex for an average DIY'er.

before you do anything check the wiring plugs at side of battery, known to cause such a prob

Not too bad, but the exhausts have to come off a v6 to swap box...
Best case scenario - low atf (though driven for long like that means fubar box). Worse case is likely to be fubar box.
