Title: Starting problem 2.5 TD

 2.5 TD Elite. I have a long standing intermittent problem (getting a little more frequent). Starting when the engine is warm! Just occasionally it just won’t start at all, but if I wait, perhaps an hour or two, it will start instantly. I am told it might be the relay to the fuel pump in the tank but I can’t find the relay! Does anyone know of this problem or know which relay it is or have a diagram of all the relays (The diagram on the Tech Help section does nit list it)? Cheers. Miclyn.

Common issue affecting the BMW engines fitted in beemers, Range Rovers, and Omegas.

I've heard that chipping it cures it, but waiting for confirmation...

Hi fella, and welcome!

I've suffered this very problem, and this was after changing the injection pump at a tad over £1200!
For the present, forget the in-tank pump/relays.
I'm pretty sure that from the symptoms you describe, the problem is the fuel temperature sensor within the injection pump. So, at your next warm-start, try gently pouring a kettle full of cold water over the pump, then turn the key.
You'll probably find that the engine fires-up straight away.

In my own case, I noticed that my battery was, (albeit only slightly), under par.
I got the alternator output etc. checked first, battery was confirmed as slightly down, and fitted a new battery, (of the correct spec.)
Warm-start problem instantly solved, and I got the correct battery for 63 quid - job done!

As an aside, you'll notice that the glow-plug light doesn't show on a warm-start - another of BMW's crazy ideas!

I'm sure there is a little resistor mod you can do to solve it, bloke at work has it on his range rover

I'm presently having these problems, so i would be very interested in how you get on. I've heard that check out the pump in the tank or maybe cleaning out, any crap i've aquired over the years, in the tank. So gonna give this a try this evening at the side of the house. I'll let you know of any outcome.... :y

It was the tank lift pump that was the cause of my similar problem. Mine had failed but some are just a matter of cleaning the filter
(suggest wearing Surgical Gloves when delving around in the tank)

I think the no hot start prob is generally the temp sensor in the hp pump.
You can buy a 20 quid gizmo on ebay to trick the ecu, check range rover sites,

I have come up with the same tank pump answer and have had the pump and filter cleaned out (unfortunately the tank was full and I didn’t fancy doing it myself) and as last time when it would not start we could not find any live electrics at the pump have replaced the relay as well. I expect, however, to know for a while if the problem is solved and even then if it was the relay or the sludge that caused it. If it is the sludge in the pump its likely to only start after considerable mileage I have done just over 100K. From the few starts I have subsequently made it does seem to be back to its old instant start performance rather than the very short half second cranking I had started to get before it fires. Thanks all for the help and it certainly seems to be a not uncommon problem, I will report back if I have further problems.
