Title: i'm loosing my mind :( pictures needed
Post by: vrba on 15 September 2008, 11:30:22
1. why is my car so silly the first few meters when starting cold?
2. and i'm loosing little water apx 2 dl on 1 month or 1500 km and cant see where the leak is. no mayo in oil.

for the 1. question car was starting normal on cold and now in morning starting is few sec longer than before and little silly. but when started everything is ok. and then when i'm pulling off throttle response is poor for apx 20 m and than all OK. sometimes i get EML on and than i need to floor it  several times and it goes off. if i remember the code was for knock sensor :(

for 2. check heater bypass valve. little black plastic thing with 3 1" hoses and a vacuum pipe on top of it. behind the plenum on the V6s under the wipers. absolute git to replace... it'll look all crusty and pinky-white if it is leaking.

for 1. not sure but crank sensor rings a bell <-i am likely completely wrong on that tho...

check the codes and post the numbers back here.

I agree with babby on the leak - HBV has got to be the first thing to check.

16   Knock Signal Circuit 1

That's the code what i got. The light goes on and off randomly, it,s on and after some while it goes off. I'm confused what it could be cause car has very bad throttle response when the light is on.

Thx

Ok, you need to check the knock sensor and in particular the cable.

The connector for this is mounted on the cable tray which attaches to the cambelt cover on the front of the engine (or to the EGR valve on pre97 cars).

Follow the wire (it should run down and behind the alternator and aux belt tensioner) and check for damage as I have seen them poorly routed following cambelt changes which results in them getting caught in the aux belt and being damaged.

Re question 2: I changed my HBV recently after I had a spell of randomly losing coolant for no apparent reason. Eventually managed to catch it in the act though. When I took it off there were no crusty deposits and it looked in fairly reasonable condition actually. Although the new HBV has certainly cured the problem.

same as when i changed my hbv, didnt look like nothing wrong with it, but it certainly stopped the leaks.   :y

I was suffering a small coolant loss. About every three or four weeks the low coolant warning would come on and I'd top it up about half inch or so and it would be fine for another few weeks.

My main stealer told me it was coming from my oil cooler. They wanted £699 to fix it, I didn't know about this forum then and I just used some Radweld (I thought I was being clever but experts here suggest that wasn't such a great idea) anyway, since I did it it has been fine (2 years now).

I'm only a novice here but it might be worth checking out if you can.
