Title: wheel bearings?
Post by: laurie on 13 September 2008, 18:07:45
I have a droning noise from the front passenger side wheel, i suspect it is the wheel bearing, is this the case?
Also i notice when at a stand still, if i pull away quickly the front wheels slam, almost like a front wheel car wheel spining. Is this bearing related. My old omega never did this, so i guess it must be related in some way.

Also i need a front passenger headlight washer, anyone got one?

Any help most welcome

cheers

Also, does the omega have twin horns, sounds like mine is only running on one horn the passenger side.

Best thing to do is jack the wheel up and feel for play......if there is some and its wheel bearing related then it will reduce significantly when somebody presses the foot brake.

Dont rule out the tyre though!

Jack it up & spin wheel - listen for noise.  Grasp wheel at 6 & 12 o'clock - see if you can rock & feel for play. If there's play you should feel the same rocking @ 3 & 9 o'clock if its wheel bearing.

Wouldn't have thought the "slamming" on pulling away to do with wheel bearing - more likely stuck on brake - could also be source of noise.  Check caliper slides free and pads free to move ok.

i have tried the spare and got the same noise so i suspect it is the wheel bearing. the slamming is strange, the breaks are okay and how would that affect it??

thx alot

They might be sticking on a little; when you move back off, they have to break free - it can be a rather alarming noise..

Wheel bearings you can normally diagnose - does the noise ease off/get worse when you go round a corner?

i have noticed a little ticking noise when cornering, the droning seems to go when over 65mph. i checked the tyres as i had this on a freelander and the noise was due to flat spots on the tyres. I am pretty sure the bearings are at fault, but need to get it checked i guess.

Thanks for the info, very helpful.
Are the horns easy to locate on the passenger side??

The front wheels Slam, as if spinning?
Dont really understand the description tbh. Could do with a bit more info,  could be anything from a bald tire to a binding caliper. Jack it up and spin and wobble the wheel at 12/ 6 oclock.

Yeah - stick your head up under front bumper at front corner, passenger side - you can't miss them.  Held on with 1 x 13mm bolt.

front wheel bearing relaced, but still got slamming on front wheels. it is like having a front wheel drive care and pulling away fast. i am now lost as to what it can be.

I have checked tyres.
wheel bearing replaced.

Is there something else it could be? imagine a front wheel drive cavalier and pull away from stand still as fast as possible, i get that kind of experience.

thx

Might be worth checking for play in the bushes on the front suspension. Might just be a drop link or wishbone bush. I would expect these to complain at other times, too, though. Any clonking when going over potholes, etc?

Might also be worth checking the engine mounts. Could the engine be twisting on its' mounts in reaction to the torque being transferred to the propshaft and maybe the exhausts fouling on something and knocking?

Try to rock the engine side to side by hand.

Could it be the same? A too low level of power steering fluid?

I have the same problem, I think. I'll try filling more steering fluid as soon as I can, then I'll see.
