Title: Diff Oil Spec and questions..
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 25 September 2008, 14:25:08
Please can someone tell me the grade of oil needed in the rear diff?

My diff seal is leaking so I want to make sure it's ok before I get around to changing the seal. I can't get to VX on time so I need to get a litre or so from a motor factors. Anyone know the capacity, of what the Diff should take?

Also - is there a Diff drain plug for changing the oil?

I don't believe there's a drain plug. Oil is nothing special. Standard EP90 hypoid gear oil will be fine, assuming it's not an LSD, of course.

Nope. ;) Just added that to clarify that the advice was valid for open diffs only.

I used Motul 90 AP which I got from Opie Oils which is suitable for "normal" diffs or LS units when I replaced pinnion oil seal. I believe it's only about a litre for a complete drain and refill. I needed 600ml after seal change.

I used this as my motor is ex plod and I didn't know if it was LS unit or standard, and their doesn't seem to be any reliable way of telling except removing diff rear cover.

There's always the "find a quiet supermarket car park.." method. [smiley=evil.gif]
