Title: LPG Conversion 2.0 16v recommendations please.
Post by: Elizabeth_Parrott on 24 September 2008, 20:58:54
I would like to know about LPG conversions for my old but well maintained 2.0 16v .  Could someone tell me what a reasonable price for conversion is, or round about?  Also what kind of price per mile for my car to run on LPG.?My car is petrol by the way. ::)

I can't tell you much about the effects on a 2.0 ltr .. but on a 3.2 V6 it is saving me about 10p a mile .. running costs on petrol were around 24p / mile .. thats worked out as

Petrol 113.9p/litre * 4.54 = 517.11p/gall Fuel consumption over 5000 miles is 22 mpg ( I tow a lot !!! ) = 23.5 p/mile

On Gas its 58.8p/ltr*4.54 = 266.95 p/gal gas consumption is averaging 19 mpg which gives = 14.05 p/mile

You will have to do your own calculations .. but you'll get about 10% worse mpg on gas due to the fact it is lighter then petrol.

If the savings were the same ... 10p/mile then its easy to work out the payback time .. in miles .. and you know how many miles you do/intend to do  with the car.

My conversion cost £2240 .. but is a V6 and top-of-the-range done by a garage. Folks on here have done their own for £800 ....  :)

hi, welcome to OOF  :y

My 2.6 cost me about £700 to convert myself, and there are a few people on the forum here who have done their own conversions.

Is a rule of thumb i would budget on spending £1500 for a 4 cyl conversion, this could make it cost prohibitive, but that would depend on how long you intended to keep the car and what sort of mileage you do.....

With the 2.6 i managed to get my money back on the conversion within 10,000 miles (3 months) the other thing to consider is the positive effect it will have on the resale value of the car as well...

if you have any other Q's ask away  :y

Just to give a further idea ... been out to the car to get me paperwork ..

I filled up today with the LPG light flashing (very nearly empty) and put 64.09 ltrs in .. cost £37.67 .. I had done 239 miles since the last fill. Of those miles about 90 were towing so I reckon the average mpg for that "tank" on petrol would be 20mpg. At pump prices here it would have cost £61.79 to fill with petrol for the same journey. I saved £25 on the one vist  :)

Thanks a lot for that.  I'd really like to know what the DIY procedure involves.  I'm a fairly competent mechanic and would love to know if it's within my capabilities.  I really like this car, I got it for nothing except a bit of TLC and need to make it more economical, its so luxurious, LPG seems well worth it to me.

There is a pictorial diary of my conversion here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1216678718

I'd say it's not for the novice but not too bad really. Cost for a 2.0 will be £500-600, I reckon. I'm paying 12.5p a mile doing my normal commute but again on a 3.2. A 2.0 will get better fuel consumption than that.

If you're interested in a DIY kit bear this post in mind http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1220362854. A good few crs on this list have this kit fitted and OOF members can get a discount.

my advice is: if you will not DIY let it be done by a strongly recommended garage by OOFers..

and as Kevin said
" it's not for the novice "..

I agree with Kevin, it's perfectly simple to do as long as you have some knowledge of what's what and are patient. It is major surgery after all!! Have a look through the gallery and you'll see a few photo shoots of LPG conversions. :y :y :y

Oh, and if you want the details to get a quote from the supplier I can PM them to you :y :y

Thanks for all the replies, espescially from Kevin, excellent instructions and pics, I reckon with that type of info I could do it but other reasons like time and no garage space right now measn I will look to have it done professionally.  Now I would like OOF recommended places in the south west, I live outside Bristol, but will travel.

Entwood can recommend a place - I don't know of any places I would recommend, but avoid ones near me

As suggested :)

I had my conversion done by these guys ..

http://www.amsautogas.com/contact.htm

and I am well pleased with the results. Several highly experienced members of the forum have "run their eye" over and agree it is a neat and effective job.

If you have ANY questions .. give Patrick a ring .. he was more than willing to discuss all manner of things before I made the decision .. it was partly this openness that made me choose them, there were places far closer - and cheaper -  :)

Only you can decide which system, and how it is installed, but a load of research can help :)

There are also some pictures here

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1210944190

As said .. cost was £1850 + VAT = £ 2200 ish ..

Calculated payback was 20,000 miles  BUT ..  I bought the car to LPG it so was already budgeted for .. so rather than look at 20000 miles I look at the £100 a month I'm saving out of my pension .. :)

I seem to remember a while back seeing a company in South Wales offering good deals on conversions around £1200 for a 4 cylinder I think.  No idea of the quality tho....

They were advertising on Ebay so maybe a search there might be worthwhile.  I think they were based in Bargoed, Gwent up in the Valleys.   Not far from Briz!  :)
