Paperclip test won't show why speedo not working, but is described in Maintenence Guides section.
For speedo, does power steering work, does ABS work?

Any other parts of dash not working? And does the Average Speed on MID seem accurate? If so, try reseating dash panel, failing that, it points to failed speedo - quite rare though :-/
-
BTW it is worth getting a Haynes manual as the vast majority of it will apply to your car - its really just the facelift bodywork that will be different. Engine, brakes, suspension etc will be pretty much the same.
-
just gone and checked it:abs,tc,c/c dont work.what do you mean by mid
thanks kenny

Probably best to check fuses etc.
On my old car a similar thing happened to the rev counter, was diagnosed to a dodgy earth on the back of the dash. I got VX to fix it but I am sure others here will be more help in checking this.....

MID is the display/fuel computer.
Sounds like you ABS ecu has failed, relatively common it would appear on 1998 or later ones...

Multi Info Display - its where the clock/trip computer display is. One of the computer functions is average speed.

Have a go with the search facility on "general Help" section for ABS ECU. There are quite a few historical entries with a wealth of info. Including where to get a recon of your unit done, how much it works out at and also how to do the job. You need patience and a selection of tools.

The n/s Rear hub is the speed sensor and the abs would seem to be linked to this problem, I would place on a tech 2 machine and get a reading from there, as playing around changing ecu's jus might get a little pricey.
