Title: Crank shaft senror life
Post by: chrisdb on 02 October 2008, 12:57:56
I was browsing the tech info section and noticed in the sensors post that the crank shaft sensor has a life of about 100k. As my car has done this now, is it worth me changing it before it gives up?

I would just keep an eye out for a code 19, check ours at least every month, tyres, oil, washer fluid, fault codes etc

Great idea! I normally only check the codes after a fault but it makes sense to check and pick up stuff early.

Thanks

yup, and many faults not deemed serious enough, like crank sensor, to illuminate the bulb  :-/

What causes the failure of this sensor? It's only a simple capacitive sensor and in general they are extremely reliable in all other industrial use; why no tin Omega? Too hot place? Too much bathing in hot oil? Too cheap sensor? Anyone have any idea?

its not a capacitor its a Hall sensor uses a magnetic field i believe and magnets wear out!

it also doesnt help that the sensor wire runs past the exhaust manifold

The wire gets cooked - find out which version and buy a spare
