After replacing my (hopefully faulty )HBV this morning as weather was fine,I just wondered what is the best type of pipe clip to use.The spring type as fitted by VX are an absolute pain to remove and replace without that niffty tool so I struggled with a set of pipe wrenches,but then thought that a jubilee type would be easier to work with.
Is this some clever cheaper alternative used at manufacturing or are they really better as once they are back on they do seem to hold tight.

Spring clips every time on rubber pipes full stop......as they cant be overtightened!
Mole grips work well on them :y

Cheers for that...obvious when you think about it..as white knuckles can crush pipes..mole grips??couldn,t get the jaws open enough to then allow sufficient tension to close tight..must be me then ??

Depends on your grips I guess
You can wind the adjustment screw in before you close the jaws having placed the jaws over the clamp.....

Trying to get at the HBV clips was a job for a magician..let alone have a free hand spare to hold mole grips and another to tighten up bolt...us mere mortals only have 2 arms and hands.

Good grips will clamp those clips without adjustment....did exactly the same job for sombody at the weekend :y

After removing the scuttle and giving myself as much access as possible, it still took me the best part of 45 minutes swearing to get the HBV off. I used a pair of mole grips (crap ones admittedly) and a smallish adjustable wrench. New one went on in 5 minutes though, which was typical :)

I found it easiest to remove wiper/scuttle.
Then I removed both large and both small breather tubes from plenum breather box.Removed clips from both the 2 pipes on the right hand side then pulled the old hbv acroos to allow access to the clip on the single left hand pipe.That only took about 15/20 mins max.Problem came when in the imortal words of Haynes (assembly is the reverse)as try as I might couldn,t get enough open grip on the pipe clamps to get on the clip for the single right hand pipe,as thought it easier to get both the right ones on first as clearance was better.
Think if I ever do it again would buy a set of those special clamp removal tools as am sure it would be fairly easy then.
Anyway jobs all done,no visible water leaks ,heater works so will give her a 100 mile run tonight to work and back and see if any coolant is lost or the smell of antifreeze is still there.Did give it a good rinse down with hose so hope don,t smell it anymore.

Water pump pliers (slip grip) are very good at removing the spring clip type :y

Best tool I found for getting those spring clips off is a pair of long nosed mole grips with an overall length of about 8". I found them on fleabay cost me about a tenner inc P&P.
