Title: Windscreen washer bottle
Post by: JezInBrum on 05 October 2008, 16:02:37
Hello. I am starting to wonder if there is a flaw with the design or positioning of the windscreen washer bottle on models fitted with headlamp washers. This is the second one that has sprung a leak. When i got the car the nozzles were missing so i manages to get some & fit them. There appears to be a blockage somewhere on the right hand one which needs looking at.

Anyway problems began when the pipe to the windscreen nozzles got kinked & restricted the flow to the jets. Soon sorted ths by addjusting amount of slack by the bonnet hinge. Problem gone I thought.
Every time I now fill the bottle it leaks out. not gush, more of a seeping.
My main suspect to now had been that the bottle got holed by a stone like my last one but it just dawned on me that maybe whilst the pipe was kinked the pressure crested by the pums has dislodged a pipe.
Has anyone else had something similar happen. As I would appreciate a few pointers prior to having to take the bumper off to gain full access.
Thanks in advance

You say a blockage in the rh one; if there's no flow perhaps that pipe has come off/broken.

If it leaks out as soon as any water is in the bottle it may have a spilt or worse (dunno how I'd know) but maybe one of the pumps has come adrift and it is leaking from there.

Does it mainain any level if left alone?

It does rather sound like you'll be taking the bumper off to see.

mine leaked after i had a slight 'bump' ::) but it was only the pump getting dislodged from the bottle as it's a push fit into a rubber grommit  :-/

You may be able to get away without removing the bumper.
When i removed my bottle from a 99' mini-facelift to clean it, I only had to remove the grill and was then able to work the bottle out

The leak is a slight drip. I filled the bottle after cleaning round ther bits i could gain access to. Spotted out the window 20 minutes later a stream of water. Went out again to see a very slow drip from the bottom of the bumper.
Will have a fiddle round with the pums first & work from there. New bottle is about £38.

Well it was goodish news, I found the leak. I removed grille, felt about for loose pipes. I then filled bottle & fwelt about for leaks from tank, still nothing. It was only when I glanced down at a pipe that ran along the fron x-member that i noticed a small trickle of water coming from a pipe. Somehow due to there being slack, it had risen slightly & had been rubbing on one of the fans. I removed the pump it was attached to and cut off the pipe just past the hole. In total I removed about 8 inches of piping. I then had to feed alll the slack I could get from the other end on the pipe where it connected to the bonnet down through the engaine bay & back to the pump. I literally had just enough. Phew. Will need to be replaced sometime as no doubt it aill chaffe on something, but at least I have functioning windscreen washers.

Good news indeed.

- Thoses pesky fans can catch on all sort of things when bits have been disturbed.
