and I also have EML light on. Paperclip test indicated code 14, coolant sensor voltage low. Understandable as MPG is down and running rough at idle. The coolant seems to be getting onto the exhaust somehow as there is steam coming from the back and NS of the engine bay.
Before I order parts and start stripping off the plenum etc is there anything else I could have over looked? I checked all the connectors after replacing HBV (removed plenum for ease of access) and all OK. Could I have damaged the coolant wiring or is there another connector I may have missed?

Are you sure the rubber hoses are on properly or that they may have a tear in it? If your getting steam then the eml light is giving you the right code and that the sensor is working properly.

Any evidence of water in the valley? I wonder if it's thermostat / oil cooler cover / coolant bridge? Might be worth having the plenum, manifold and inlet gasket off for a look. You'll be able to check the coolant sensor while you're there as it's mounted on the coolant bridge.

Last time I had the manifold off I did notice some blue-ish corrosion around the coolant sensor, but there was no evidence to it leaking last time....(12 months ago)
And there is no oil in the coolant either so I think the oil/coolant bridge is ok.
Looking at Ron Mc Bs photos none of the pipes connected to the HBV would cause the steam to come from the rear/NS of the engine so it is either HG (unlikely), coolant/oil bridge (but no oil in coolant so unlikely) or the coolant sensor has completely gone fubar!
My leaning is the latter having prob corrodied completely p!ssing coolant and it running down the side of cyl heads on to the exhaust manifold.

I have thought about that but it wouldent drip on the exhaust, just onto the gearbox bell housing.

It doesn't have to be a failed oil cooler. The oil cooler is bolted to a plate that bolts down onto the top of the block. If the block to plate seal fails you have a coolant leak but no cross-contamination.

humour me a minute, your in germany? is your car left or right hand drive and which side of the car is steam coming from as you sit in the car. Call me thick if you like... What year also?

if no leaks are apparent, its best to pressurise the system....that'll soon pick out yer leak :y
