Went out in the car today and then noticed that the speedometer was not working.
I guess the question is, where on earth do I start to find the problem ????
The steering felt heavier than usual today as well, i un did the steering fluid cap and moved the steering from left to right many times, in the past this has usually sorted the problem, but it has not on this occasion, could it be the steering box, or pump ?? There is plenty of fluid in the res and you can see the level going up and down when the steering is being moved from side to side
Help :s

Any warning lights showing :question
-
check fuse 14 :y
-
check fuses.I think the steering is fuse 12,but I dont think the speedo feeds from the same fuse (or not on my model anyway). :y

First as Mark said above!
Could be an abs sensor (rear one(s?)) which affect speed sensitive steering and speedo - if so pop em out and clean them.
If this doesn't cure it could be ABS ECU. Does your abs and tc lights come on with ignition & go out shortly after engine started? Or has previous owner already removed bulbs to disguise this?
Check TC and abs working, also does your cruise control work. If not afraid ABS ECU likely to be breaked.
Barsteward of a job to change - search for abs ecu on here for help.

speed sensitive steering, yikes didnt know it had that
Ok we'll i'll check the fuses and ABS sensors in a moment, ill let you guys know
And no warning lights are flashing, traction control and ABS still works though because i kind of got a bit mad, and had a mad dash in the car as i found out the problem, the back end kicked out and TC sorted that out, and pulling up to my house, hard on the brakes and the ABS kicked in.
Actually thinking about it, does the ABS sensors need to be checked if i know the ABS works ?
-
check fuse 14 :y
it will be the fuse fella ! then check your fag lighters for forgien objects :y
-
Steering is done by electric pump, not a hydraulic valve in the column feeding a direct pump.
It could be a fuse. If not it could be that it has no speed info so has given up.
-
OK i took car out again, the cruise control does not work, nor still does the speedometer and the steering is still heavy.
I checked fuses 12 and 14 (and actually all of them) and there all seem to be ok
Although traction control and ABS does still work, are you saying that my ABS ECU has gone then ?

Do this 1st as easy and free!!

Where are they located ?
And just the rear ones have I got to take out and clean ? or are there any at the front ?
-
Are the ABS and TC lights lit on the instrument panel?
-
no lights on the dash, the TC light comes on obviously when i turn it off though, but will go out again once i press it again, no warning lights on the dash.
-
Not likely to be the TC/ABS unit then!
What year is it?
Any recent work under the bonnet?
Is F19 ok?
Is FV1 ok in the fuse tray on the battery?
-
Just took the abs sensors out, cleaned them and put them back but still no joy.
I have recently fit a new wiring kit for the sound system in my car, the lead from the battery i've ran down where the heater pipes are, the outside edge of the rubber gromit so the wire does not heat up and melt (driver footwell) and ran it to the boot,
i've chopped into my kenwood wiring loom and fed the speaker wires down the nearside of the car (as that was the easiest place to run those wires)
I did have to move the fuse tray about a bit on the car, but I have put it back in its place again
And my heater matrix was blocked, so I took it to have it cleaned out as the heater was not working (as recommended by you guys on here :)) and now the heater works as it should
i will admit, everything did seem to work before i ran the wiring kit though, but that's about it under the bonnet wise.
BTW its a 1999 facelift 2.5 Elite

20:35, Just went out to the car to look at the fuse panel above the battery, f19 was dislogged, pushed that back in again and now EVERYTHING works fine, speedo, steering and cruise control
Something so small to cause such a headache, I love you hehe
Many thanks to EVERYONE who's helped me this evening and made me love the motor again instead of wanting to take a chainsaw to it :y

Nice one mazza7282 :y
And nice one Mark.
Way cool :)
-
If its 1999 then its a mini facelift...facelifts didnt come in until 2000 :) Gotta be said, if the problems started immediately after you messed about with the wiring...good chance thats the cause! lol
-
Mini face lift ? Mine looks just like the 2000 - 2004 models ?
New problem, erm the speedo and cruise control doesnt work again, although the steering is fine.
Its like it broke sine i just left it on the drive doing nothing :s
I've re read the thread and checked fuses, relays etc but still no joy
If its starting to get a bit beyond me, should i take it to a garage ?
-
(17:12) Ok so i've just been to a freinds garage, and plugged it into a computer, and it says that there are no codes present ?
I'e taken every fuse/relay I can find and checked and cleaned it and put em back, but NOW despite steering now NOT being heavy, speedo and cruise doesnt work :(
I guess i'll have to get myself a new ABS ECU perhaps :(
