and no I'm not referring to my flea ridden moggy ;D but the metal thingy underneath the car.
Has anyone fitted a cat and is it a diy job; any hints/suggestions would be appreciated.

might be a bit tricky depending on the condition of the bolts unless you have any heat you can use. If they're not too bad it should just be a one for one swap. If you havent sourced any yet speak to Marky Mark he may have some good secong hand ones in stock/
Otherwise just make sure that you secure the car properly while you're working underneath :y

I have a brand new genuine cat for sale, for a third of dealer price :y

I took one off/on a couiple of days ago. Dead easy! Ramps are a great help if your weary of getting under the car.
The nuts on the top end to the manifold might be tight and you'll need a nice long extension bar. I found it easier to use my torque wrench to get them free. If they snap you'll need to get the studs out and that could be tricky. Might be difficult to get heat on them. The other nuts - one mid way down and two to join to the mid section should be dead easy.
Make sure you note where the oxygen sensor wire goes, and disconnect it before you start.
When you put the new one in the torues are:-
Cat to manifold 30Nm
Center bolt 20Nm
Cat to mid section 18Nm

It's the pipe leading to the cat which has a hole in it and it's severely corroded and the glassfibre/cladding/soundproofing/hairy stuff is clearly visible; but surprisingly it's not making a noise nor can I feel any 'blowing' from the hole - suppose I could use a bandage but there's not much left of the pipe to attach it to!!!

Ignore it.....the heat-shield is a separate item which dies over time.
Wont affect anything although it might start to rattle a bit.
One option is to remove the heat-shield altogether!

Wow thanks for that piece of advice you saved me blowing over £100 on a new cat - didn't realise that there's a seperate internal pipe which carries the exhaust gases to the cat so the glassfibre/(whatever it is) and outer surounding pipe is effectively a heat-shield then.
What about MOT - would a tester fail it?

Nope....and the internal pipe is the same grade as that that exits the cat!
