Post by: tintin on 07 October 2008, 00:30:42
Do the old gals have any unpleasant characteristics that need close supervision on, maybe known faults that jump out and bite you on the butt?

Most important part is to keep them well maintained...regular oil changes, and keep the breather system clear or cam covers will leak...

So as long as the breathers are clear and the oil is maintained they are pretty much bomb proof then, cool. Cambelt's i do every other year as a rule any way. Had one snap once and have had nightmares about it ever since. My theropist says i'll be fine as long as i take procautions in the future :-/

A slow water leak is alomst certainly the Heater Bypass Valve (HBV), no matter what you think, your mechanic thinks or the Haynes manual says.

It WILL go rusty, usually at the tops and bottoms of the doors.

If you have 'soap' in your oil filler cap, it is much more likely to be the oil cooler than the headgasket. Vx mechanics seem to go straight for the HG - at a £600 expense.

The suspnsion alignment is critical - get the camber set as well as the tracking or you will eat 235 x 45 x 17" (i.e. expensive) tyres.

After that - the good news is you have a great motor that drives really well, goes like stink and eats motorway miles at least as well as the best in class. And the MV6 handles too.

Congratulations and enjoy  :y

crank sensors fail.  paperclip it regularly, checking for fault codes.

Yep, although they don't handle quite the same.
