Title: V6 Plenum area
Post by: John_Clayton on 14 October 2008, 15:17:11
I recently saw a photo on this forum of the black EcoTec box on top of the plenum with its cover removed. However, despite searching and searching I can't find that post. What I want to know is does the cover come off this box? Mine appears sealed and I don't want to break it. I removed the whole box and cleaned it with brake cleaner and an airline but feel I may have some dirt still in there as my engine's not running smoothly. Also I'm not certain I have the two small rubber hoses at the rear of this box fitted correctly. Again, although I have seen a diagram of them somewhere on this forum I'm unable to find it now. Does the "search" function fail to work for others, or is it just me? Thanks in anticipation.

The trim cover just prises off with a flat screwdriver to each side

If you have a look at this link mate the pictures should show you what you need to know.
The "black box" with EcoTec across the top is part of your breather system, which clips off with a flat screwdriver.
Hope this helps :y

The box does not come apart readily .. it was deliberately cut for the photo's I believe ... some of the holes are very small so an airline in both directions + lots of carb cleaner and patience is required .. :(

I found our hose pipe did the job quiet well, then left to dry out for a while before refitting :y

not running smoothly? Oil in plug wells?

It's actually only running on one bank of cylinders. There's no oil in the plug wells, the plugs appear fine and I'm getting a spark on all 3 leads so it would seem to be a fuel injector fault. However, having just had the plenum off I wanted to be sure I'd put it all back together properly.

Thanks for the other replies. Obviously the search facility does work, but I've noted the various post dates and categories so I can find them that way in future.

As cleaning the black box appears to be such a problem I'll probably have a go at separating the two halves as The Barge Captain did, and glue them together when clean. Incidentally I thoroughly cleaned the metal breather box recently, by prising off the cover then drilling and tapping a hole for a small screw to resecure it. You just have to ensure the head of the screw doesn't foul the rear of the cylinder head.

I found the aerosol can of carb cleaner (from Halfords) had great pressure enough for blasting through the black breather box, the pipes, holes, and the breather chest*.

You need more than one can though to clean all the muck right out, and what muck that is!!!! :o :o

* PS if you do this a full oil change should be done. :y
