Just had the second hand AR35 box fitted (Tuesday) not done 20 mile and a part of the side came out dumping ATF all over the carriageway, subsequently. >:( cheapo Tech 2 says incorrect gear ratio. Any ideas what this spring thing with a black plastic cap is, sits near enough next the exhaust - only know that cause RAC man says that stopped it from falling out. Unfortunately can't take any photos as the car has been towed to garage to examine the extent of damage.

Gutted for you Johnny... Incidentally, have you found someone reliable for ATF changes? I don't fancy doing it myself as it's not a good thing to do at the side of the road!

Garage I use in colchester is transmission specialist - charged me £117.50 for gaskets & fluid change. He's a reliable guy, may be a bit pricey but no problems with the change.
This car has had more ATF changes in the past month than I've had hot dinners and looks like another AR35 is going to the great scrapyard in the sky. Getting really pissed off with this motor >:(. Beacon boy I want my saloon back :P

Drivers side think it may have had a met cap on it before but not there now. Box history 100000 miles, vehicle service history. thats about it

Do these boxes have a pressure relief valve? And what pressure should they run at.
-
that black plastic "thingy"sounds like the 4th gear accumulator cover.about 55mm dia and has a spring under it, held in with a circlip. pressure valve is built in to the pump.

hi johnny, i cant think what part you are talking about, ive had more bad luck with AR35`s than anybody else im sure but cant recall seeing what you describe, i had an oil pump go after a week, which in turn damaged the end of the t/c so i couldnt get it off the box, changed box again & got almighty oil leak, box out again & removed & fitted new oil seal & ive still got a little leak, anyhow you are going to need another box by the sounds of things, but as someone said to me youll laugh about it afterwards, & by me typing that i think your response to it will be the same [2 words, the 2nd one is off!], anyhow i hope this g/box had some sort of warranty even though it was 2nd hand, good luck with it matey you really have my sympathy :'(

Sassanach - Thats exactly what it is any reason why this would fall out and is it repairable. TIA
-
if all the parts were held in place by the exhaust then all you need is the circlip.

Tim you think your unlucky but at least you got 25 miles and it lasted a week! lol
Poor Johnnys lasted 15 miles and 3 days! Hopefully its something simple, are these circlips prone to coming off then?

Further to my recent box failure, just got car back from garage with new circlip installed and all top up. ECU now happy and car running fine will see how long it lasts this time. Just hope there wernt a dodgy batch of circlips going around on 2000 model AR35. Hopefully 3rd time lucky. :y

cheers tim
U must be a professional at fitting boxes now. The amount i've spent on this, would have been cheaper to get a recon box. just goes to show second hand not always the best. hopefully have pleasant driving from now on. :y
