Title: mileage question
Post by: gan1503 on 16 October 2008, 10:18:35
Hi all
Just a query really! Any idea what mileage a 2.0 petrol engine is good for?
My 99 mini facelift has done 173k, has been serviced well & had a new timing belt about 12k miles ago.
Just wondering if anyone knows if they give up the ghost easily as mot due next month & dread it failing on loads if its gonna die in about 3k miles lol

I wouldn't worry, if it has been regularly serviced and has no signs of failing it could go on for another 100k.  I replaced my engine (165k) which seized with a donor with 175k and still going strong a year later.

The only weak point on the 2 litres is the head gaskets and you can replace them fairly easily - just don't run it with the gasket blown or it will cook the oil in a matter of minutes which I found out the hard way.  Also, make sure you replace the water pump and tensioners when the timing belt is being renewed.

The only reason the first one went was due to a lack of those things that you put in an engine.  Erm, what do you call them, oil and water???

I'll read this thread with interest....
I suspect it's the " how long is a piece of string answer " really .The life expectancy will depend on how it's been driven and the frequency and  quality of the servicing, but I await the response from other users of the 2.0 engine.

On the subject of the mileage I went on a site to get it valued, nearly fell off my chair laughing when it came back that they'd buy it off me for £150 ;D ;D ;D

The other weak point is that the bore on no.1 cyclinder (the one at the front) can wear - I suspect that is what happened to mine at 188k.

If its still running smoothly and the plugs look good, I would keep it going.
