You could try syphoning the oil out with some plastic tubing or use a syphon pump - a few going on ebay for about a tenner - either way it's pretty messy :-/

You'd have thunk those clever folks at VX would have designed a drain plug into the sumps really  :-? Are the sumps steel? Maybe able to braze a scrappy found sump drain plug in  ::)

Probably a good idea to take off the sump 'cos then you can also check the state of the filter.

You'd have also thought that the same clever bu66ers at Vauxhall could've put a filler tube in the engine bay while they were at it!  :(

Did BMW fit a drain plug when they fitted this box in the old 5 series?

My old 123 series Merc had a filler tube under the bonnet with a dipstick in the middle of the cap. Why didn't VX steal that idea?

I'd take the sump off anyway, just thought it'd be tidier with a drain plug to empty it first  :y

The Senator & Carlton I used to have both had the same thing, as does SWMBO's Astra. I really can't see the thinking behind leaving it off.

So that VX can charge for an extra couple of gaskets and an extra hour in labour charges ;)

i have to say that i didnt do too bad with atf going on the floor, i used one of those old oil tins (the tin ones) and cut the side out and then took all but two opposite bolts off the sump and then let one side down first and then empty the sump bowl shaped thing into the tin lol.. i must admit it's the most messy when there's all the oil dripping from the gasket after... drips for ages!

you could get an extra sump bolt welded in but as said you need to check/clean the filter and magnet anyway so sumps do have to come off anyway. Vx treat the box as a sealed unit so dont account changeing the oil/serviceing. We know better of course, as experience has proved.
Vx now giving away work shop consumables on trade club. I got a sack of super white oil spill stuff with my can belt kit. But it does look alot like cat litter.

I watched my mech change mine(atf). He undid all bolts loosely, then removed all the bolts from one end first working back to the other end. Leaving one, i think in the corner? This one bolt(might have been 2) was holding the sump up fully, no leaking oil yet.
He then gradually undid the last bolt so that the other end of the sump dropped slowly down as he undid it. This gradually let the oil spill over the edge of the sump(s) into a container. He had obviously done the job before. But as said the main mess was from the drips once the sump was fully removed.

Mine was when the filler tube from my funnel under the bonnet fell out of the gearbox. :'( I'd been doing pretty well up till then. :y

It's a cheat ;) I use similar to top up gearbox oil in my Morris Minor. It's basically a cheap funnel and a length of garden hose pushed together. Hose into gearbox & pour oil into funnel :y
