Title: Rev gauge and petrol gauge erratic
Post by: mossoppit on 16 June 2008, 23:35:30
Hi Everyone, I have a problem with my Omega 2.5 CDX auto N reg, the Rev gauge and petrol gauge jump erratically all the time, the petrol light goes on and off as the guage goes up and down. I have had it into the garage but they can not find the fault. They think it is electrical but they can not find it. Has anyone got any ideas please.

May seem silly, but just check that fuse number 14 is fully pressed home and not loose therefore breaking contact every other second with vibration. ;)

Hi Lizzie, I will check first thing tomorrow but the garage said they checked all the fuses. I will still double check. Thank you

Sounds like a lose connection, has the dash been out for bulb replacement or anything.  Just wondering if the instrument pod isnt seated in properly, allthough I cant actually see a reason why it shouldnt be.

Hi, as for the dash being taken out at all it has not been to my knowledge and it has only started happening about 3 weeks ago. I can not think of anything that we did to the vehicle at the time it started either. One day it was fine and the next it wasn't. It will probably turn out to be something silly but finding it seems to be the problem.

I had a similar problem with my old 2.5, started intermittantly and then got worse. Local VX garage said it was a loose earth at the back of the dashboard (although didn't say exactly where). I think it may be a relatively common problem as they seemed to know how to fix it as soon as I mentioned it. Think mine was done under Network Q but they seem to typically charge close to £100 to take the dashboard off etc. so might be worth investigating yourself.....

We had the fuel gauge half of this problem not long back.  On the back of the instrument cluster there's a flexible 'PCB' connecting up all the various dials.  The fuel gauge has a 5?-way black connector (near the middle of this 'PCB' that had become a very, very loose fit on its mating half.   Just had to improve this connection by locally fixing the flexible PCB down to the plastic underneath, and the problem went away.

If the dealers don't find this, have a look yourself.  There may well be a similar connector pair for the rev counter.

Didn't take any photos at the time unfortunately, but if someone has one, I could point out the connector in question.

As two things have gone wrong simultaneously though, an earthing type fault does seem more likely!  (Unless the rev counter wiring is on the same connector?)

Pete

hI Pete, Thank you for your reply, we are going to try to have a look this afternoon as It would be better if we can sort it ourselves rather then pay garage prices. We are going to look into all the suggestions posted .

Thanks again.

Similar problem here with my 2.5 V6 '95. Started couple weeks ago and now it gets worse.
Can anyone direct me where to look loose earth connection behind the dash, I'll remove it soon.

could simply be dash connector - press back about where tacho is to see if it reseats.  If not, remove dash and investigate

Removed the instruments panel today, cleaned/tightened all connections. Had couple of problems with rev counter and fuel gauge immediately after I returned the dash but now seems to work - I'll see in next couple of days if it really works  :-?

sorry, bit late, def dash connection. Dont ask how i know...
Insure its pushed/seated as deep as poss. And screws are fully home. Or pack out the connector to meat the dash socket. But remember it needs to move a bit to line up. Hth
