Title: Repairing Rear Door Seal (Saloon)
Post by: tunnie on 20 October 2008, 20:08:14
Tracked down the leak i had in my passenger rear footwell, its the door seal.

I put loads of toilet paper over the door sill inside, where the Vx logo is, and trapped it in the door.

Driving back in the rain today, the paper is soaking wet, a little has also gone into the carpet.

I Vax'd the carpet again at the weekend, and had it bone dry, but i can now feel water logged in the corner.

So whats the best way of repairing the rubber seal?  :-/

It just peels off the door? Just buy a replacement 'rubber seal' from Vx then?

What kind of glue would i need to attach it to the door?

if its a clean split glue it back together, failing that id get a clean one off a scrapper & change it,if there isnt a split does the door shut tight?, perhaps adjusting the catch might be an option.

Are you certain the paper didnt just act as a wick, was it exposed to the outside of the seal?

Looking at the seal its not broken anyware, no cracks or gaps. I think it just maybe tired & old, just not gripping right.

The passenger rear door only gets opened every few months!!! Drivers side every day almost to sling a bag in there, but never the passenger rear.

I don't think i want to mess around with scrappy ones, they maybe just as bad if not worse. They cannot be that expensive from Vx?

Its possible, but i don't see how else water can get into the rear footwell, scuttle is perfectly clear.

Unless its rust or hole in the chassis.

I wouldn't be surprised. I priced one for my Manta years & yeras ago, I forget now exactly what it would've cost, I do remember it was very expensive.   :-?

Some things i really cheap, inner metal cage for double din headunits on the facelifts are £4!

It needs replacing, as long as its not 3 figures i will get from Vx.

20 years ago, door seals for whatever car I had at time were around £25...  ...I guess double/triple that now.

Invetsigate further first before spending that amount.

Have you tried adjusting the door catch so the door pulls in against the seal ,it may be that simple  :y

Tunnie,

Before you rip the seal off try lubing it with a light grease, and then shut the door and leave it for an hour or so.

When you open the door look for witness on the seal path, anything that isn't contacting will appear different.

Seals will perish over time, especially on the once in a blue moon area's! its a bit like a fork seal on a motorbike which can perish through inactivity.

Also check that the tape holding the seal hasn't cracked.  If it has impact adhesive should do it, but make sure to degrease the area thoroughly first.

Failing that... replace, it's just easier than titting about with second hand or bodging a dead one, as once you rip them off they stretch anyway. :'(
