Title: Is a 2.2 a Dirty Engine
Post by: Auto Addict on 22 October 2008, 13:42:33
I change my engine oil and filter an average every 1800 to 1900 miles yet the oil comes out black.

Just wondered if a 2.2 petrol was a dirty engine.

It is more likely that it will down to the type of driving you are doing. An engine that is involved with more stop start work, or sitting in ques for periods of time, will not run as effeciently as one cruising on a motorway. Many years ago I was involved with a lub oil company and we carried out analysis of engine oil from identical vehicles some involved in mainly city operations and some on motorway work. The latter ones consistantly achieved 10 times the length required between oil changes.
From a personal perspective I run a 2.2 auto and it has covered circa 5k since last oil change and the oil still looks good. Have you changed the type of oil recently as a "higher spec" oil can some times clean out the gunk left by a previous oil. Y ou can some times then encounter oil leak problems so best to keep to the same grade.

Hope it helps :y

change mine after 2k or so, generally its just brown.

When i first got it, and i started doing my own changes, it was jet black for about 4/5 changes, now it just goes to a dark brown.

I use Vx semi synth, it's had 20 or so changes, never run it more than 2k between changes, still comes out black.

I think its AA's short trips to the Post OFfice with his pension book that do the damage  ::)

Jet black?  :-/

Tbh i have not cleaned the throttle body or that main pipe at the back right over over a year now, so i suspect on mine thats causing it to darken.

Maybe you have some sludge in the sump?  :-/

Ah! Is that where I'm going wrong :o

I believe Chopsdad posted a similar thread about his oil being black on a 2.2.

Black oil is actually a sign that dirt is being picked up by the detergents in the oil and not building up in the engine, so it's actually a good sign.
