Hi, I hope someone can help with this. Acouple of weeks ago No. 6 plug lead broke down completely causing a nasty smell of burning rubber and made the engine run very rough, there was an almost total loss of power and there was a very bad vibration when trying to accelerate, it was hard to get it up to 40mph and I probably should not have driven it to work and back some 20 miles :-[.
The No.6 lead was changed along with the other 5 leads and from then on everything seamed fine. We have just returned from a trip to Blackpool some 572 miles round trip fine going there but on the return journey I could not accelerate without a very nasty vibration like the engine was not happy and bore a resemblance to the feeling when the plug lead was burnt out.
The difference is the engine runs fine on idle and on light acceleration right through to the 80s but if I try and push it at any point it vibrates.
Could this be another ignition fault, transmission ecu, or engine management ecu got its knickers in a twist ???

Did you change the plugs as well as the leads?
If not, the broken-down no.6 lead may have left some tracking on the insulator of the plug?

It's possible that the lead failure caused damage to the DIS pack which is now failing itself ... might be worth a look at night with the engine running somewhere nice and dark, have a good look around the DIS pack for any signs of sparking ??
Bit of a long shot ... but if you are sure its HT there's nowt else but plugs, leads, DIS pack !!!

Thanks for that help !! The plugs were not changed but were new 4,000 miles before the leads were changed. Oh and its an automatic box
Another thing I noticed that the Tacho needle sticks around 2500 if held at that point for long

What is the temp when your cruiseing does it climb when you put your foot down ?
Was there any crud in the plug holes when you changed the HT leads, if so did you clean it out ?

Hi Iainb, No the temp is fine, if I put my foot down it vibrates could be not changing down ?? if I put it into sports mode the problem is less noticable.
I recall seeing something about the gear box going into a "Safe Mode" could that be the problem ?? could this have happened when the No.6 lead was faulty and I drove it for 20 odd miles ??

Hi, Went for a drive today engine started well and ran smoothe & even reved up smoothly, warmed up as normal and ran very well until I tried to accelerate hard, so I pulled over into a layby and tried reving the engine in neutral it didnt like it at all was rough and missfiring. left to idle for a while it smoothed out and ran well and would rev up to 3500 slowly without a single miss/vibration, so I drove off again and slowly accelerated up to 70 without any probs.
So this only happens on hard acceleration.
Should I change the DIS and the plugs and would you reccomend a genuine DIS ???

Hi ya. What you should consider is getting pluged into a diagnostic tester before anymore work is done. I dont mean a dealer visit but someone who knows what they are doing and isnt going to rip you off for parts that it doesnt need. I suggest you PM one of the admins to see if they point you in the right direction. My own experience tells me that you have a fault but not what it is. Sorry Im not much help but there is help out there :-?

Check the plus....ignore the fact they were changed fairly recently!
If you get a lead failure which results in tracking on the plug insulator, then metal from the lead cap gets deposited on the side of the plug....and hence just changing the lead does not do much!
Remove the plugs, check them out and clean the insulators with T-cut or similar or even replace them

Hi, thanks for your help I will fit another set of plugs as thats the cheepest option and I got nothing to loose, coz its a fantastic motor !!
So if its no better then am I to assume its the DIS unit ??
