Title: guages how accurate?
Post by: ARH1 on 24 October 2008, 14:41:33
Hi there,
Can anybody tell me how accurate the temp guage is on my v6 2.5 est
temp guage reading 82-85 degrees, thermostat according to data opens at 92 deg. if guage accurate, either sombody put lower temp stat in or temp not getting high enough to open stat.
BTW eng running ok and heater feels hot enough etc etc
ARH1.
ps going to change cam gaskets, should I change stat at same time?

sounds like the stat has failed or stuck open.

Whist not technically accurate it does shoe the rough running temp.

I would be tempted to replace the stat, normal V6 running temp is 92 ish

has your instrument panel ever been replaced?  its not unheard of for these to be coded wrongly, and therefore indicate the wrong temp.

Hotel21 may be your nearest with a tech2 to check this out and see if the temp is REALLY wrong.

This is controlled by the ecu. A new instrument panel won't correctly programmed. I had this and MarksDTM calibrated it for me with his Tech 2. In any case, if you can get to MarksDTM or someone with a Tech 2 you'll be able to get it set up correctly

Hi,
I don't think the water temperature gauges are accurate. Most seem to read a bit low.
I was concerned that my engine was running low temp. Indicating between 85 to 90 deg highest. Engine side cooling fan cutting in about 90 deg then temp dropped to 85 deg.

Changed the thermostat, no different.

Borrowed thermocouple and meter from work, clamped t/c to thermostat housing and meter in car, average running temp about 92 to 93 fan cutting in when 96 showing.

Now have GS500 scanner, I set it up to read engine temp and shows average 92 deg all the time. Now I just mentally add 5 deg to reading.

If your engine side of radiator cooling fan is cutting in on occaisions, then my guess is everything is OK, and it's just the gauge reading low.

HTH

Roger

I really don't know why they print temperaturtes on the gauges. As long as it's just under mid gauge when moving, and gets up there within the first mile or two, and the fans kick in just over mid-gauge, everything is OK.
