It sounds like you've done it right, but the numbers don't seem right to me. TB's guide is in the Maintenance Guides here:

There's a video linked in the guide that shows you how to read the codes.
The list of fault codes is in the post below.

0294 doesn't show on any of my lists .. :( but then again none of the lists shows a 2.0 16v .. :(

0294 cylinder 12 injector signal low. Dont think thats the right code unless you got a v12 lump hideing in there somewhere. :-)
10 flashes is Zero. On mine if it has a code it just flashes 4 the codes and then stops flashing , if yours works the same, and theses no reason why is should be the same, the next 10 could be start of another code? Depends if the 2.0 works the same way. Just a thought.

Thats for an OBDII car I think ... IFAIK the 2.0 16 v is not OBDII .. :(

I was under the impression early preface lift where 2 digit and face lift(or what ever the cross over point was) where 4 digit? So i think hes miss read the flashes, easy done.

Easy tiger, it really is not the best thing to go diveing in with out being certain of the correct code.
Can you confirm the year of your car, face lift or pre face lift, and the exact digits flashed out, also that you did paperclip and not pedal test. We are a bit confused, the number does not seen correct.
I suspect you have 4 digit code but have miss counted somewhere. Ta

hi all right here go's just done paper clip test again my car is a 1996 p reg 2.0L 16v the code if counting 10 flashers as 0 is 0204 must have missed one flash on the second 10 flashers sorry for the confusion its all new to me :-/cheers

Pop the lid off the cable tray that runs along the drivers-side of the engine and look for the (4 pairs of) injector wiring coming up vertically in amongst the other wiring that runs 'fore-and-aft'.
You may find that vibration has caused chafe of the insulation, and a wire-to-wire short. We had a problem with this on our '96 2.0. Ours gives 2-digit codes though, on an 'N' reg.
With code 0204 you want to be looking at the injector wiring nearest the scuttle end, I guess; but check them all.

I am still confused. I was expecting a 2 digit code sequence from an early 2.0.
Gary - is it flashing quickly and slowly - like morse code.
Check this video:

Or does it look like this video?

Hi all Ive had a look at the wires going to the injectors but cannot see any chafeing as anyone got anymore ideas as to wot it could be thanks gary :(

ok Jamie has confirmed your car should give a 4 digit code, as i understand it. So it is obd 2. Thing is that code does not match your car. I would suggest a couple of re counts with the paperclip test to make certain.
