Title: front end movement
Post by: omegav6est on 01 November 2008, 01:49:45
i have recently bought my omega 2.5 v6 estate and i must say i love it,i have a small problem with the front suspension though.when bought the car had a very alarming knock from the front end, result was two very knackered wishbones i have changed these and all is now mostly good except when driving i can feel slight movement through the steering  wheel/floor its like driving over cats eyes only softer/muted.i have checked the roll bar links they appear to be brand new i was wondering if maybe the top mounts might be suspect?i have done the shock absorber bounce test and all seems ok,as i said no bangs or rattles just some movment.incedently about how much are good front shocks?fleabay want £100 for a pair is this good? thanks

only leaves the stearing idler..

did you follow the guide for wishbones? dont tighten the bolts until the wheels are fully loaded with the car on the floor. 110 nm plus angle tighten or what ever it is??

It can feel like this if you've got a mis-shaped tyre, try swapping the fronts for the backs and see if it makes any difference.

If you haven't already, I would get your tracking amd camber checked first. My assumtion that putting new wishbones on would set it all back to where it should be was wrong - by 11.5mm. That's a lot.

Mine felt like there was something loose too.

If the camber is wrong and the car is toeing out rather than toeing in the steering can feel really vague and loose.

Don't ignore camer either. Have a look at the picture on this page, from WIM's site...

Looks familiar to me - and it took 2 sets of tyres to learn my lesson...

Good luck &  keep us posted  :y

Dont even bother with tracking alone. Complete waiste of time on the omega as its only a 10th of the possible issues.
1 check the car thoroughly for broken springs, steering idler ware, and wishbone bush wear(you ve done)
2 that done and issues rectified take car for FULL GEOMETRY SET UP. This involves camber caster toe and trail front and they sort the back.
3 then get new tires.
Wim as posted are the place to go.

Yes it would be worth changing the drop links, as they call them, anti roll bar to suspension strut. But i think he said in first post that they looked new? I think thats what he ment. Anyway, if its knocking over bumps then yes change drop links. They are only 20 sobs or so. Wont affect handling though, if they are just knocking, afaik?
