Title: Any ideas anybody?
Post by: megaomega123 on 03 November 2008, 09:49:15
Long story coming!!
Had a front end bump in April. Mainly cosmetics damage which has all been fixed. The 2 front wheels hit a kerb at around 60mph with the steering lock on and took side impact, nearside was outside of wheel and off side was the inner side of the wheel.
I have been experiencing vibration and feedback through the steering wheel at 40mph and above 75mph.
I now have 4 new wheels and tyres and now get vibration and steering feedback above 75mph. The only thing to add to the accident is that when I attempted to reverse off the reservation I didn't appear to have any drive, the rear wheels were in good contact with the road.
Immediately after the knock the vibration and heavy knocking started, this has diminished with the new wheels and tyres but the above 75mph issue still exists.
Wheel bearings have been checked, all brakes have been checked, bushes and track rods have been checked. I am at a bit of a loss now. It seems a bit odd that it is not constant and only related to speed. The same exists when in neutral and with clutch in.
Help!!
Any thoughts would be helpful

Not tested these mounts as yet. Have just been speaking to somebody that has suggested a possible issue with propshaft also. I would probably go down the road of gearbox mounts also but with the symptoms showing when in neutral I would lean more towards propshaft  :-/

Have you had your wheel balancing double-checked?

Buckled wheel?

Warped / imbalanced tyre?

Thats all i could think off that would only happen at certain speeds.
When i had a very low speed bump to the front of my saloon (3.0 manual) it didnt even crack the bumper but it snapped the cradle mount under the gear box (its located under the handbrake) worth a look, something to do with the car stopping very quickly and the weight of the engine and box shifting foward further than usual. easy to look and check, but my money would be with wheels....

hope it helps
