Had my MOT yesterday and bar the bald tyre it passed. I do have an advisory on the "Nearside Front Shocker Damp" Is this the shock absorber or dampener? How much do they cost to fix and what do they do? Is it something i should sort out straight away? I wish i were more knowledgeable on these things!!
Cheers

Means the same and most commonly called the shock absorber. Quite a straightforward job which I think is somewhere on the guides. :D ;)

Advisory is for FRONT shocker, and the guide is for a REAR shocker. Completely different as far far as fitting is concerned. The front shocker is part of the front strut and once that's removed you'll need spring compressors to strip it down and remove the actuall shocker. If you have to ask what it is I suggest the job is a little to involved for DIY. Suspension etc should always be replaced in pairs

Advisory notes are usually issued by an MOT tester to cover himself in case VOSA get involved ln any dispute over the pass/fail of the car.
If a tester thinks an item is a borderline pass , VOSA say that he should issue an advisory note, which signifies that he has noticed that there is a potential problem but he doesn't consider it serious enough to fail.
In the case of shock absorbers it's worth checking how bad the leak is,slight dampness doesn't usually affect the operation of the shocker much so you may not need to change it straight away.

I would also replace both the front ones at the same time ;)
