Personally I would purchase a trailer and fit a hitch (if you have not already one fitted) rather than have a mpg increasing, ugly, roof rack!

I have never noticed a miggy with one fitted. :-/

There was a post on here recently giving a link to a supplier of roof rack rails for omega saloon - try searching for roof rack.

mk2?

I have one for my estate.  But assuming yours is a saloon I think there was a thread recently where someone said they come up on ebay fairly often.  Have you tried Halfords etc?

...and I think that is a Sierra in the picture!  But you are right, the old '86' Carlton's did have rain gulleys running along the sides of the roof to take a roof rack, unlike the Omega. ;)

yep. Halfords, thule(not sure spelling) not a roof rack, but bars. They clamp into the gutters, if you look along the lip above the doors they clamp on a little ledge bit, (youll see the moulding),  with the doors open, and the rubber seal of the door seals round it. They do ladder clamps as well. The mig roof i thought would not be long enough to get the ladder stable, but a bit of fiddling and it does a good job. Cant see how a trailer will carry a 3 story 3 stage ladder tbh. Oh and dont bother with the plastic end clips they just fall off. And be carefull mot to scratch your lovely looking roof, its easy done. Hope helps.

It  will if you have an extended chassis one as I once built,  ie. a ex-camping 6' x 4' trailer with an six foot extendable bar mounted underneath, with light board fitted onto it, which I pulled out (up to chain limiters I had built in) so that 12' long loads could be legally carried.  Designed and built it for moving a complete shed 50 miles, but it did for a boyfriends ladders etc. :y

wow, sounds like a small house. Tow bar, trailer, modifications and limited to 50 and 2 left lanes. For a ladder? Roof bars, cheapest less agro. Noisy tho, only down side.

I know an ex motorway police officer who went on holiday with a trailer hooked on the back, he got pulled over by one of his ex colleagues, when questioned he'd completely forgotten about the trailer! ;D

then there is reversing a trailer, and parking with a trailer,( bus stops only?) and hight issues by the sound of it. Somewhere to keep it, when not in use? Is towing a trailer more economic than a roof rack? And if you need to check roof bars are secure just open the sunroof. Sorry cant see it myself. Nice car tho, good nik.

The bigger the trailer the easier it is to reverse.  With an extended length trailer there is no height problem, finding a storage area for it is usually possible (speak to friends & relatives), and as for trailer v. rack for drag, the latter I understand is worse.  A rack losses up to 15% mpg, even without a load, but if you load the trailer efficiently, because it sits within the slipstream of the car, it is like sitting closely behind an artic; you won't lose much mpg, if any. :y :y

No problem;  Old 6' x 4' (or larger) camping trailer for £80 - £100, metal, chains, bolts, and bar running mechanism (used an engine mount from a Toyota Carina II), curly cable covers from a truck stop, trailer side light reflectors and new light board / or lights. board & cable to construct one.  Total no more than £150 all in! Last time it was £140.  A days work at worst.  When do I start?  ;D ;)

trailer vs roof rack :-/
trailer has less wind drag BUT it has extra weight and toad drag
although i use a trailer myself i say the roof rack wins for moving a ladder as long as it quick and easy to take of when movement is made and without leaving dents and scratches
