Title: lightened flywheel
Post by: doog on 15 November 2008, 08:39:16
Ive reard some where that the omega flywheel is very heavy  and could benifit from some lathe time to lighten it.

has anyone done this before and how much can be removed without totaly ruining the idle?

As discussed before, a dual mass fly wheel doesn't take kindy to machining - you lose the dual mass effect. Besides, an Omega is a 1600/1700 kg car, and you're not going to gain much - if anything - by your engine spinning quickly up to high rpm, if it's then going to take an age for the car to catch up. More suited to a Lotus 7 type kit car than a luxo-barge!

It is heavy. Doubt you will have any joy doing much with the std one, but lightened ones are available from the likes of chavcity (Courtney).

It will make engine spin up quicker in neutral, but can't see much benefit beyond that.

I've not looked ... but are they standard solid flywheels that need a sprung clutch plate?

I believe so.  I haven't looked that hard - the days of me driving a Nova with 100000W of bongo tunes and wearing a baseball cap sideways are long since passed....

You'll find lightweight flywheels here, not cheap especially if you wnat them fitted aswell, and only increases rpm response :y

And only increase rpm response in neutral!

Much cheaper to get a Cavalier flywheel and get it lightened.
