Title: MAF Sensor
Post by: Kieran on 17 November 2008, 08:44:01
Hello all
After spending an afternoon at Kevins getting my car gearbox upgraded which has made a big improvement to the car all thanks to Kevin we did come across a fault with the MAF sensor. Tried to clean it but it looks like i will have to purchase a new one . The question is does anyone now where to get one apart from Vauxhall which i am sure will rip me off.

Cheers

I just called my Vx stealers this morning and they have offered me one for £130 rather than the full retail of £180.

This rate is because they know me and always give me TC price discount rates on whatever I buy whether it is listed or not.

I have the same issues as you (0170 & 0173) on my 3.2, and I'm just going to buy a new one out of frustration and to KNOW that it is fixed.

I am doing this on the strength of the diagnostics work that Kevin did to your car this weekend.

Read this thread for full details.

Kevin did mention that you have the same problem and i know how frustrating it can be >:(. I hope that the new sensor fixes your it but for £180 i think i will try a second hand unit first :-/.When we swopped it over for Kevins one it cured the problem so fingers crossed :y

Interestingly, autovaux seem to think the 3.0 and 2.5 one is the same.....I am not so sure (plug shape!)

Thanks just had a look  :y. Albatross have a look in the wanted section first and check the ebay link there. Could be cheaper than Vauxhall direct

Albatross, if you want to borrow an ELM cable to double check the live data before you jump, I might be able to help.

Might be worth posting the Bosch part number from the side of the MAF. The 2.6 / 3.2 don't have a separate intake air temperature sensor. Not sure if that makes the MAF sensor different to the 2.5/3.0. :-/

Its an interesting one as the 2.5/3.0 makes little or no use of the air temp in the correction anyway. Which is not surprising when you consider that air mass has already taken air temp into consideration anyway effectively!

would the maf know the air temp? surely it can only know the amount of air, not its temp/ Obviously this would vary with temp for a given load though...

Could I get this checked with one of those cheapo Tech2's? My local garage mate has a red thing that he can see most DTC codes etc., but I understand that they are limited?

If so, what would we need to do?

Thanks for that. Online on eBay they are £115.00 BuyItNow, so for the sake of £15 I'll live with using my local Vx stealers. They are very good to me and I have saved a hell of a lot more than that by going through them until now, so i don't mind "investing" a little in that relationship.

It does not need to know the air temp in reality....just the mass of the air......and then it supplies a corresponding mass of fuel  :y

Call Mike on 0161 873 8300 and tell him what model.
I have just bought a new Transit alternator from him at a very good price.
PS I have no connection with them other than as a customer .

Yup, my understanding :y

So why do early ones have air temp sensor  :-/

Possibly in an attempt to give an idea of fuel temp....but having buggered around with a variable pot in palce of the air temp sensor some moons ago.....it dont do much!

Having just received a very welcome PM from Kieran, I have just ordered a MAF sensor for £33.50 which will be here this week.

That's £100 off what I thought was a good deal and £150 less than the retail price from Vx.

No bl00dy wonder they're called "stealers".

Thanks Kieran and Olympia what a STAR! :y

I was just wondering if the MAF had a built in air temp sensor which wasn't present on earlier cars, thus rendering an early MAF sensor incompatible. It has 2 additional pins above and beyond the power supply and sensor output, suggesting another sensor.

live data shows an IAT reading so it's measuring it somewhere. I agree it won't add a huge correction.  I guess there are times when the engine is not using MAF as the primary load input, even if only in limp-home, and knowing IAT is useful then. It's also going to be a big factor in cranking and startup where heat soak might have got to the induction system, although coolant temperature would give it a big clue there too.

If it's the one pictured on Ebay, I'm not 100% sure it's the right one.  :-/ Might be best to double check the Bosch part number.
