Title: Front wheel bearings - change one or both?
Post by: jjleonard on 21 November 2008, 18:40:13
I was advised by the bloke that I bought my car from that the front passenger side wheel bearing would need changing soon. I'm ready to take on the task - when I have the right tools, of course - but I wasn't sure if I should change both fronts, rather than just the one.

I suppose I'm worried that there would be some level of 'imbalance' if the passenger side is new and the driver side is old.

What do you think? The car has 80k miles on it and I see no evidence in the service manual that they have been changed before.

TIA.  :)

Thanks!

I'm guessing that to check the play properly, I should jack the car up, grab the wheel and make sure it doesn't wobble top to bottom or left to right (if i've got my terms right).

Just to add... I chaged mine too. Only the bad one and it's running fine. If the other guy starts humming, check out and change, else... keep it .

Take a look at the shoks tower screws. They get loose and you risk you life. Mine were about to fall when I changed the bearing. Thankfully everything is ok now!

jack the car and not only shake but make the whell roll (run). Yu can notice a bad bearing this way too.

GLORY TO THE LORD!!!  ;D ;D ;D

No need to change both... Only brake and suspension parts really need changing in pairs. :y :y :y

Just do the noisey one....not hard to do and not like you save any time by doing both at once.
