Hi all my first post
Is there is a gearbox cut out switch fitted to the Omega e.g. stops you starting the engine with the car in gear unless the clutch is depressed fitted? If so is this and the reversing light switch one and the same?
As for a while now when trying to start the car (out of gear) I get just a click and have to wiggle the gearstick and or depress the clutch which has got steadily worse, now I've noticed my reversing lights have packed in.

Have you got a year and engine, might be able to check wiring

Hi Yes
2.5V6 it was registered Aug 98 so I think it's safe to say it's a 97 model.
-
On a similar note whereabouts on the gearbox is the Reverse light switch located, mine have stopped working & I doubt if both bulbs will have blown simultaneously.
-
The switch is located to the rear lefthand side of box just where the prop shaft joins the box.

Hi TheBoy I'm assuming I'm right in that there is a feature to stop you starting with the car in gear or am I way off?
-
only got paper diags for earlier cars, can't see anything :-/
-
the switch for selecting gears on all omega boxes is located on the underside on the car on the near side of the gearbox and is a right pain to get to(loads of swearing) small hands is a must
these switches are prone to weather
if its an automatic the part can work out to be very pricey(£400)
you will get a fault code up as P1700 Transmission Indeterminate Failure (Failed to Neutral)
but this should not stop the car from starting unless you have an automatic or you have the clutch pedal undepressed or you have faulty clutch pedal switch
hope this helps

Ah this sounds promising :) but not quite sure where its located. From what you describe it sounds like the reversing switch is this one and the same or a different switch?
As looking at the manual there is no mention of any other switch/connection for removal of a manual box?
-
Right.
On the auto there is a switch to stop you starting the engine in gear and this is on the selector lever.
On the manual there is no switch.
Your description sounds possibly like a tired starter if its a manual (you mention clutch?). By putting it in gear you are having to press the clutch and this will be removing the drag of the transmission from the starter on cranking and this in turn lowers the load.

Hi yes it is a manual the problem has been there for some time now (cars hardly used) it's just got steadily worse over time and to start it I've wiggled the gear stick and or operated the clutch.
The last time I also noticed my reversing lights had packed up to so just wondered was there such a "in switch" as you say it could all be coincidence. That said when it does start with or without the clutch depressed it turns over fine but it could be as you say is there a test I can do to check this?
