Title: Quick oil Question
Post by: bighed on 25 November 2008, 22:25:33
Guides say to change oil every 4000 miles. Ok got that sorted.

But also recommends using vx oil every time.

Now if the breathers are kept clean. ie cleaned every fortnight can I use a cheaper oil (obviously not aldi special) just not something that will cost 30 a pop.

As have been thinking (can you smell the burning) and surely if the vx oil has only done 4000 miles then its only just starting to lose its viscosity?  :-/

Before its said, my local vauxhall dont accept ABS cards.  :'(

You need a word with Alf, he'll phone your dealer to sort it out. My local would give me Trade Club prices ... eventually - I think I wore 'em down ... but used to get the receipt in the name of A N Other local garage. Alf's predecessor phoned them & sorted it.
When I asked at the dealers near work about ABS she said 'Oh! That's the one with the bright yellow card isn't it!' She couldn't/wouldn't remember the name of the ABS member though.  :y

Sometimes dealers are a bit "funny" when you start using your ABS trade card."I'll just ask the old one in the office" but they usually come round if you start to moan a bit. And once they know you "your in"
Just keep persisting mate :y

last time i rang Evans Ballsaw in Reading they wanted payment in full in person at the counter before they would order anything, trade club or not.

burnham garage in Slough i just quote the trade club number, then go in and pay when the parts are ready. So easy.

You'de think Mr Ballsaw would want the business, clearly not... Stuff em i say use another dealer if poss.

When doing an oil change does anyone use a flushing agent to get most of the old oil out??

IMHO ... DON'T !!!  Flushing has a tendency to loosen hardened crap, without actually removing it, this crap can then get trapped in narrow oilways leading to lack of oil flow and failure of critical componenets.

Far better to do many frequent oil changes as these slowly dissolve the hardened crap which is removed by both the filter and the next oil change.

As an oil change with Vx own stuff bought on trade club card is less then £10, it is probably cheaper than using flushing oils anyhow.

Just by 2.35 p's worth (including VAT, at todays rate)

:)

Do you really clean them every couple of weeks :o
