Title: Knocking noise
Post by: bighed on 26 November 2008, 22:16:15
Guys when im drivin on a normal A road the mig dont handle too bad (bit wibbly wobbly) but on back lanes its more like jockying a jelly down the road than driving a car.  :'( :'(
Sometimes I get a twitching and a knocking thru stering wheel. Any ideas?  :-/
Also what can I check over to try and get to the route of problem(s)
Any help especially pics  ::) would be very appreciated  :y

Droplinks is a likely candidate for the knocking :y

Like already said by James the knocking probably the droplinks but would they make it bounce around like a jelly?

I'd probably get the car raised, and check the wishbone bushes, droplinks, and bottom balljoints as a first port of call - also worth checking for play in the steering idler, and giving the wheels a wobble for play. That little lot should reveal something - post up and let us know any findings!

I put a bar under my wheel and lifted it up and down, that showed my wishbone bushes were totalled :y

its a case of taking the wheel off/turning wheel to full lock and undoing two nuts which are quite tight,
ones on the inside of the strut and the others on the anti roll bar

Its a track rod end, there are two each side

Thanks ngrainqey. Im gonna have a good look at it all sometime over the weekend, weather permitting.  ::)

Got all the filters and an oil change to do.

@ Elite Pete. If the track rod end bush was excessively worn I suppose that could play havoc with handling/steering?

If the track rod ends are worn the car steering will be as sloppy as a sloppy thing at a sloppy party....    :o

As per my first post Hotel21, it is like that sometimes. Gonna give it all a good looking over on sunday when I do my oil and all filters change.

How would you check for play in steering box?

Wheel bearing check is 9+3 o clock and 12 + 6 o clock isnt it?

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will report back when wiser
