Title: TD questions
Post by: Arrolman on 27 November 2008, 17:42:09
hi,

I remember asking a while ago about the best way of upping my TD's power, seems very lacklustre, even compared to my new VW van! Can't find the thread though :(.

Also, goin to my sisters the other night I turned into a corner, say 45 degrees and the rear end kicked out, was only doing 10mph and the road was dry! Tyres are recently new also. Noticed today that when steering to the right it feels as though the front wants to turn itself hard to the right, poss bearing issue and the cause of the tail swinging out :-/?

Cheers,
Iain

just chipping the diesel takes it to around 170bhp and not too expensive.
if it's auto though you'll be wanting an ar35

Hi,

Its a manual, one of the reasons I bought it. Theres only a few places up here that do chips properly and they want around £500, lot of money for not alot of gain it seems

cheers,
Iain

one of the ebay ones should be good enough for what you want
(should be around 50 pounds)
it's just a plug and play unit

Hi,

Would be wary of them unless someone with experience of them can give me the low down, why are they so cheap? Any problems associated with them? :-/

Cheers,
Iain

no problem send me a pm with year of car and a contact number and the ten digit figure on ecu, a chip can be yours for around 70quid, brings it back to bmw spec, the difference is astounding!! :y

dont know any straight swap unless you mean the 525/325 rangerover dse etc?
anyway we have a chip for the petrol  models yes but alhough an improvement on std doesent really improve power just driveability and torque :y

just behind the battery theres a black triangular box, it's in there and has a very thick cable going to it
you have to take it off and "crack" it open as it were, think there's two screws or something then you lever out the chip and replace with the new one

It might be worth opening up the ECU to see whether it is "socketed" or not, because some will require a chip socket soldering in.

If you have already checked, ignore me!  ;D

going on what ive read on here the early ones are a plug fit [like mine], & i can confirm that chipping gives the "wow" factor even in my auto so a manual should be awesome :y

Get the chip via Omegatoy or TheBoy - around 70 quid.

The difference in driveability is quite astounding. You'll get a bit of black smoke when pulling away, although it 'flew' the MoT emissions test. My estate now tackles Valleys terrain with ease, and is positively 'singing' around the 75/80 mph mark on the motorway ... !
Seems to achieve 33mpg no matter how it's driven.

Get it chipped - it's money well spent!
