Title: Heat up rate ??

From cold start this morning I travelled 4.0 miles before temp gauge started to move off bottom reading.Blower was giving luke warm air..once gauge started to move it then got upto 90 c fairly quickly and air from vents was noticeably warmer..only after I had been driving at steady 50mph for about 10mins did it go above 90 and then seemed to max out at 92.5 only going to 95 when stuck in morning traffic...the car by now was pushing out hot air from vents...I am not sure if I am becoming paranoid by this as changed thermostat in summer this year,but could a thermostat become "lazy"to open and close correctly?? I am convinced the temperature is not getting hot enough quick enough but don,t really want to get into  another thermostat replacement if this sounds consistant with others experiences.

 a simple test for thermostat is you immerse in boiling water  check the opening and let it cool down again check the opening... :y

Thanks for info cem,but if I got to the extent of taking it out I would just fit a new one again..more curious to see if others had similar heat-up rates as mine,or does it sound like stat number 2 is being "lazy" ?

My diesel is very slow to heat up in the mornings too.  Needle does not budge for for about 4 or 5 miles and I have lukewarm air from the vents.  Once the needle starts to rise though, the air gets warmer as you would expect.

Sounds like normal operation to me.

Sounds about right, mine is taking 3-4 miles on these cold mornings.

The cold air going in the inlet works well to cool the lump!

Best way to check is to start it from cold whilst feeling the top radiator hose. If it starts to warm up quickly and is significantly warm before the temperature gauge is up to normal running temperature, thermostat is toast. It should stay cold or only slightly warm until engine reaches normal temperature and then suddenly get very hot as the 'stat opens.

Sounds on a par with mine, 2.5 V6 1999 model. It's been bloody freezing the past few days though!

It is colder in the mornings now.
I noticed it's takes longer in my other car to get warm and the gauge to move slower up to normal temp, I've just had a new stat in that.
I know the  stat in my TD needs replacing as the gauge hardly moves.

this test is mostly useful when you buy new!!  as some of them are not working properly  ;D

Hi,

Not meaning to hijack this thread but my TD gauge rarely moves off the bottom if i've got the heater on, if I put it off it will rise but as soon as heaters go back on its back to the bottom. Thermostat is it? :-/

I have definitely noticed a difference this week. Yesterday was -7C and I switch to gas at 85C and it took a good 6 miles before reaching temperature. My normal is about 3 miles before switch over.  :y

Ankara in January February sometimes reaches -10 in day time ,
and even exceeds -20 at night ..

And guess what , the next day mechanics become rich ;D :y

My saloon takes about 2 miles then nice and warm - temp goes up to 92/93ēC (95ēC if in traffic jam)
The Estate seems to blow hot air quicker than the saloon, but same temp readings reached.

You can set it to switch over much cooler than that. Mine is currently set to 27 degrees C IIRC.

It's on LPG after less than a mile.  :y
