Title: Play in steering
Post by: dad1uk on 02 December 2008, 23:12:15
Just a quickie...... 'N' reg 2.0 Omega saloon.
When my steering wheel is straight and the engine off, there is no play.
If my steering is at an angle, and the engine off, there is a fair bit of free play in the steering wheel.
I have checked all the track rods, no play.
I have checked the bearings, all ok.
I have been underneath while the wife shakes the steering wheel but can't see where the play is.
The car passed its MOT with no advisory, so my question is where to look for the play.
All suggestions gratefully received.

I had similar problem last year and it turned out to be play in the steering box, it is adjustable via the screw and locknut on the top of the steering box. Mine only needed about a quarter of turn to tighten it up quite nicely. And has made a world of difference to driving the car.
Oh yes thanks to the chaps on here for there advice on it.

Right

Its a re-circulating ball steering box and with the engine off and no fluid flow you do get some play.

The real test is to start the engine and set the wheel to 90 degrees and wiggle it....can you feel play here?

If you can, then adjust the steering box   :y
