Title: strange noise
Post by: neimsn on 04 December 2008, 11:52:24
My mig has suddenly developed a whiring sound from underneath when driving, I am thinking it may be a wheel bearing on its way out as the background noise seems to increase and decrease with the road speed.
anyone think this might be the right train of thought,if so are they expensive to replace any indications would be appreciated.

thanks

Hello,Does brake application make any difference?

doesn;t make it worse but is more obvious as the sound changes under braking its difficult to describe its like its winding down to a stop so as to speak, I had a new tyre fitted at ats the other day and thats when it became more noticeable

Some tyres are very noisy I had this with Goodyear NCT5 sounded just like wheel bearings.

My wanli tyres make mine sound like a bearing is going, best way is to put the rears on the front and test it!

Wheel bearing noise mostly calms down under the steadying influence of the friction pads, give the new tyre wheel a good check over, seems strange noise has appeared since fitting?

yeah i agree though i thought the new tyre with added grip etc may have put a bit more load on,but tyre noise could well be the cause like you guys say strange it appeared just after new tyre was fitted, i will swap it round with the rear from the same side and see what happens cheers to you all for your input.

thanks
Neil.

thanks Tim, i priced up a wheel bearing £62 + VAT thats more than the tyre cost ouch...gonna swap the wheels round and see if the noise moves location if it does then the dilemma is do i then change the tyre or do i suffer it, I doubt if ATS will change it cause its noisy its not like its defective or anything
