Title: Projector headlight internals are moving?
Post by: Arrolman on 04 December 2008, 19:53:06
Hi,

Got a problem with my drivers side projector headlight. Changed bulbs tonight and the drivers side internal(reflector and projector bulb 'cover' )has come free of its mountings and is now moving about inside. I have no idea how to sort it :-/ Can't get it to clip in no matter what way I push or pull, can't get the light off due to rusted bolts. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Iain

is the reflector moving about at the top or at the bottom?

also how rusty are the headlight bolts?
mine were rusty but came out no problem... even with a straight screwdriver into a 3/8 socket!

Hi,

Whole unit is moving, if your looking at it from the front of the car the right hand side is moving more than the left

Cheers,
Iain

is there no way you can get those rusty screws out (yes they are only self tapping screws with 10mm maybe 8mm heads on)

you could do with taking the lense off and seeing exactly whats broken (i imagine something plastic has snapped for the pivoting of the reflector with the adjuster)

It will be the internal plastic adjusters broke.

You need to get the headlight out and remove the lense so you can attempt a glue repair

Hi,

I could feel a bit of metal between the 2 lamps, would move back and forward and up and down, Is this the adjuster? Is it plastic around the light? C**p design by the sounds of it

Cheers,
Iain

It is a poor design and a common fault :(

the bit of metal between the lamps sounds like the adjuster to set the dip beam for left or right hand drive cars.

As MDTM said above, it well deffo be the plastic adjuster which is a ball & socket joint and moves back and forward to adjust headlight aim, they are notoriously brittle :-/

Hi,

Any point trying to get a replacement part? Or is the glue the way forward?

Cheers,
Iain

If you're lucky you can glue the plastic back together

These pics were posted on here a while back

Or you could make a new one!!! ::)

hi,

So you can get metal ones to replace them? thing is, there wasn't anything that snapped or cracked, just moved when I pushed the bulb in, nothing fell or was loose that I could tell, will need to have a proper look sat.

Cheers,
Iain

that metal replacement was made by someone but they're not available (i asked)

looks like you're going to have to take the headlight out (soak the rusted screws with some plusgas or similar penetrant)
then you can have a good look from the back of the unit then to see if anything is broken - i know that the adjusters will come off the end of the screws if adjusted to far so could be that :-/?

if you need to take headlight apart to try and repair i think there is a guide on here somewhere - easier to search via google rather than OOF site search (it's crap)

good luck :y

If you need to open the head light up put it in front of a fan heater if you have use of one and put it on hot to get the sealant nice and soft and then pull apart make sure you undo the clips around outside of the lense as you go. :y

By the writing on the pictures it looks like they are an Ikea part  :-X ;D :-X ;D

I'll have to do this on my N/S lamp before the MOT...  watching this thread closely....
