Title: 2.2 Td and autobox?
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 11 July 2006, 19:33:10
Now this might be a totally daft question.....but here goes

How difficult would it be do bung an ar35/ar25 box onto a 2.2TD??
I come up with daft ideas like this when walking the dog  ;D

I am assumning the ar35/ar25 boxes are used on the facelifts (petrol) so mounting wise might work.

The only thing I could come up with (as its possible to do most things) is how is the gearbox ecu going to communicate with the engine ecu.....as the 2.2TD never had an autobox....or is it just a matter of someone clever with a real tech2 (TheBoy) to sort it??

Ok you may ask why i would want to do this.....a 2.5TD is too old for my uses....and i wouldnt think a 2.2TD with a autobox is going to be any slower than a 2.2 petrol running on lpg. And hey it might even manage an average of 45+mpg  8-)

Cheers

Ah, I didn't read this properly first. No, cant be done mate. You would need a lot of work for the wiringa nd computing side, none of which is there at the moment.

You would also need an ECU dediacted to that car/gearbox. I don't think one has been made, so I would sayno go.

HTH

oh, and nice to see you heremate! ;)

Cheers for the reply Ron....Looking to be a great site...well done  :)

As i was thinking.....the 2.2TD never had an autobox....so as you say wiring/etc wouldnt be there and the engine ecu on a 2.2TD probably wouldnt know anything about an autobox.

Oh well......nice idea i think....pity  :(

Perhaps it is V6 time?

v6 probably not suitable for taxi work, even lpg'd

Its not the engine ECU, there is a second ECU dedicated to the gearbox. The 2.2 diesel doesn't have one, so the box has no programming for when to change. Non starter and as said, maybe v6 time? That is a TD v6 of course! ;D

I dunno - still a bit thirsty but very smooth running, I have adjusted mine to switch over as soon as possible and under power which is required for an auto

I know you said a 2.5 TD is too old for you, since you don't need a replacement urgently why not keep a look out for a facelift 2.5 TD? I have seen a few on Autotrader recently. A 2.5 TD Estate facelift will be ultra rare but its worth keeping a look out for one

Oh btw, its marktcom from the old place :P

Only the very, very early facelifts were 2.5TDs, rest all 2.2DTi (no auto option). I guess as a taxi driver, a newish car reqd

good point, i have seen an X red 2.5 TD but I guess thats too old.

such a shame the Omega never got the 3.0 Diesel unit or one of the newer sporty 150bhp units

Unfortunatley here in Swindon.....the council have an age limit on any car being used as a Taxi as 5 years old  :( . You can squeeze 6 years out of them if you re license the car just before its 5th birthday.....but thats it. (Only other way to get more years is if you run a 'prestige' car and the council only count mercs/bmws/jags and then it upto their discretion)
My current Omega has plenty of time left in it.....it was just one of my mad thoughts of wether you could shove an autobox on a 2.2TD

Cheers

doubt there would be a software map for gearbox ecu, not sure about fitting TC or bellhousing.
