Hi Folks,
Got my new miggy, and chuffed with it so far :y
But, driving into work today, the Engine Management light came on (not the one with the spanner in the car, the one that looks like an engine).
Anyway, I pedal-tested it, and it's come up with the following codes:
1530 (something to do with the air-con relay, but the air-con works fine?)
0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) )
0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) )
I've also noted that on the engine breather box (the black thing that says "Ecotec" on it on top of the engine), one of it's outlets that you connect the 4 hoses onto has been broken off at some point. As you look at the top of it, from left-to-right, it's the 2nd one in from the left. Is this likely to be contributing to this problem?
The car is a 2004 3.2 Manual.
Cheers

the 4 little hoses iirc are breather hoses, thus giving you an air leak?
await confirmation, i know as much about cars as i do about the moon!

could well be due to drawing more air into the system. someone with more knowledge will be along soon

Though more than likely its a 2.6/3.2 with the dreaded pre-cat efficiency issue :(

Thanks for the prompt reply folks :y

Why does this not fill me with confidence... :o :'(
What's involved in getting it sorted?

I think you'll find it's a pretty common problem with the 3.0 and 3.2 V6's. Usually the pre-cats not being up to the job on these engines.
My EML has been on for months. I have it reset occassionally but it always comes back on again eventually. :(

Only the Motronic 3.1.1 cars (2.6 and 3.2) have precats.
I believe Albatross overcame it by moving the lamda sensors to be each side of the main cats, rather than precats.

How do I go about resetting it? Is it something that I can do by disconnecting the battery for an hour? Or does the ECU store them until it's reset by Tech2?

Either a Tech2 or my garage have done it using a Bosch diagnostics system.

A cheap obdii code reader will reset it, but it will come back.

Hmmmm... >:(
Could it be that it's drawing in too much air because of the breather box being broken, so then it's throwing more petrol into the cylinders?
Or am I looking at having to move the lambda sensors (which I really don't like the sound of! :o )

I've just got used to having the light on all the time now. Not sure what I'm going to do long term - probably will have to get the sensors moved eventually.

Fix the known issues, as that is always the best place to start. But in this case, it is a well known issue :(

Okidoki - thanks again for all your help folks :y
I'll try sorting the breather box first, and see if that helps... Not holding by breath, but it needs replacing anyway.
Now, anybody selling a breather box for a 3.2??? ;D

Same as all v6 I believe, nothing special about 3.2 one...

Cheers for the heads-up on that TB - that should make the hunt much easier! :y
